I think that Berto should've been fought Judah in an early defense of his title ... tough opponent, accomplished, and experienced ... but i'm not sure that Judah wouldn't price himself out, thinking that he's a bit more worthy than what he is.
HBO has hyped fighters to the point where they don't really live up to it once they take a nice step up in class or fight a style that isn't suited for them. Then they're on a short leash ... this is boxing, some fighters happen to lose, but I don't think that some fighters should be ridden off because they have 5 L's on their resume. I understand the process of working your way back up ... but damn, don't ask these men to retire. Alot of the old times fought on until they were well into their 40's ... and in this time, it shouldn't be any different. They're babied a bit more than the fighters of old so i'm sure that their window is a bit wider now than it was back then. It also depends on the promoter _ some promoters seem to protect their fighters a bit too much ... TopRank (even though I don't like some of their cards) always puts their fighters in with stiff competetion, they do a good job at match making _
what an idiot how does mayweather not have a fan base and yet he said records for the most revenue in 2 fights...??? without mayweather dlh and hatton would not have generated the kind of money they did for those fights...
Everything you've said on this thread I can agree with, fitzgeraldz. Berto is getting like Winky Wright. Except he's not as good as Wright by a mile. I don't dislike Berto. He's good. He's got great speed, good pop to his punches and some skill. But he leaves himself open, gets hurt, hasn't set himself in an identity yet as a champion. Seems to be in between styles from the start of the Urango fight. Certainly overpricing himself. If he wasn't almost certainly going to lose against Mosley (my opinion) he'd have fought him. Mosley is the real welterweight champion right now and Berto, if he wasn't worried he'd get outclassed and hurt, I'd think would be chomping at the bit to get his shot against him and get millions of dollars, even if it's not as many million as he wants. I think Mosley would probably bulldoze Andre at this point.
Typical HBO jumping the gun on an unproven commodity. They made the same mistake with Jermain Taylor. You'd think trhat after so many failed prospects in boxing they'd wise up and not over pay these fighters before they truly prove themselves worthy of the big time money.
:deal :yep In all seriousness, I think Rafael's assessment of HBO overpaying for Berto is fare considering the level of competition that he's been fighting. He's headlined B.A.D. 3 times now including once against the unheralded Mikki Rodriguez and his last appearance on the network which was a stinker against Urango. The collazo fight was both exciting and dramatic but not enough to warrant Berto's apparent high purse demands. As a Berto fan, I'm admittedly a bit frustrated with his career path at the moment. I'd like to see him in with the 2nd tier welters such as Collazo, Cintron, Judah, and/or Collazo again to really find out where he stands in the thick of things.
Berto interviewed in Houston at the Diaz-Malignaggi fight. [yt]CgZNeSO6-Jc[/yt] Maybe we'll see Berto-OchoCinco next. :yep:yep
Your stepping on some underlying and shaky grounds here... Notice the trend in the fighters you picked?...I think it's fair to say it out loud and just admit that black people don't watch boxing anymore...if they do, they aren't too crazy to support it.
It is the other way around. Hatton and Oscar bring the fans and money (use to anyway). PBF is just a smart business man by fighting both. PBF is attracting more and more fans as the other two are done.
I don't think that Shane would walk over Berto, even though the jury is still out on Berto, i'm still not going to give Shane the lead. I think Berto is sort like Shane with a bit more tools in the shed ... he has a bigger arsenal and more skills. I've seen plenty of times (even recently) where Shane has depended on power rather than boxing skills ... it has gotten him some success and he's been winning as of late but it does catch up to him ... hell it has caught up to him all 5 of his losses. Berto can outbox him and win a 12 round dec. Shane is done, yeah he beat Margarito ... but i'll be surprised if he can beat Cotto again (especially if the fight goes the distance) and he'll never be able to beat Floyd. Thats why he's trying to cash out real quick, so just he does lose - it could be to an elite guy and for a nice sum of money and he can live off beating Margarito for a couple more fights.
Mayweather doesnt belong with those names.. are you serious? I know you hate the guy but you know you'd watch any of his fights in a heart beat, no matter who the opponent. Mayweather has you talking on his own, he doesn't need HBO to make him bigger than he is.
