I've been talking about this in other thread. They've managed to delude him into thinking he's a superstar because he holds an alphabet. You'd think after this amount of time they wouldn't make mistakes like this. It was the same when they put the hype train behind Taylor. The problem also is that it's very likely he'll lose to the first name he fights, Shane Mosley would destroy him.
HBO has been overpaying for years. They are in a bidding war against themselves basically. Showtime will never be able to match. So they allow their house fighters to gain a false sense of actual worth with inflated purses. And us fans pay for it in the long run while they price themselves out of real fights. Did you finally wake up?
While HBO certainly has been a massive **** up group lately...let's not ostracize them for trying to make new stars. I'm not going to run them under the table for that, especially when they were at the forefront of the milking dead cows movement in boxing. The big issue is something somebody mentioned. HBO bends over for promoters constantly. If they can bid big money for a fight, they'll go down like a prom date. It's like they think they have no power when in actuality thye have ALL the power.
The profit potential is being sucked out of boxing due the recession and more importantly the general decline in popularity of the sport. Therefore HBO is making GOOD business decisions by offering smaller purses. The fighters had better get used to it.
This also. I can't believe HBO put up 2.5 mil for Dawson - Tarver II after seeing how poorly the first one performed. It was lunacy. And even contrary to their new penny pinching method of operating, they're paying big for Dawson - Johnson II. Why?
In the article it stated that Berto doesn't have a big fan base and it would take alot of strategy for the handlers to promote the fight right and put butts in seats.
It's hard to make the case that any boxer is overpaid, given the risks they take and the lack of guaranteed future earnings.
Berto is another HBO hypejob that they haven't been able to bring over because he hasn't fought a top welterweight yet. When Berto does that and if he wins, he'll get more respect, but until then, he's a protected HBO fighter who isn't bringing in much.
