Because when people look at his resume the only noticable fighter he has faced is a limited Edison Miranda, who loses to good people anyway, and he didn't look amazing doing it. People like Froch, Kessler, Taylor and Abraham are much more accomplished than that, but at least he has fought a notable names while Dirrell hasen't.
I have Ward winning this tournament I think hes really settled into himself as a true professional. Earlier on he was still kinda stuck back in the amateurs now hes relaxed and is improving even now. I dont see any weaknesses in his game not saying I see them in Kessler but Ward I think will confuse him at times and lets be fair isnt the fight here in the US ?
Ward is being overlooked because he has no pop and has only competed at C minus-level but I am not saying he has no chance against the main 4 but he most likely will get dominated.
Not denying his skills. But you need power to beat guys like Kessler, Froch, Dirrell, Abraham, and even Taylor. I see him being a Winky Wright or Malinaggi type of fighter. Guys with tremendous skill but lack power. He'll give Kessler a real test early on. But I see Kessler's power taking over and begin to wear out Ward in the later rounds.
Andre Ward is a huge reason why I'm glad this tournament isn't single elimination. I don't like his chances of beating Kessler in the opener, but the experience he'll gain from that fight, win or lose, will be invaluable and we'll see it in subsequent fights. Let's not forget- the first round of the tournament is just that: only the first round. There's going to be a damned good chance for development to take place, and for Ward (and Dirrell), there's going to be no choice but to learn on the job. It might well mean an early loss, but if he's cut from the right cloth, that'll just drive him to get better for the rest of the tournament. One loss isn't a train wreck in this scenario, which is more marathon than sprint.
I think the way he handled Miranda was masterful , i literally can not remember him being out of position the whole fight( i have only watched it two times though). His footwork turned Miranda into a ONE handed fighter. I my mind it was an awesome performance, by the kind of fighter American boxing needs. I think as he ages he will sit down on his shots more, again in time. If he beats Kessler he will become the odds on favorite to win the whole thing, that is a big if though.
Great replies. Those who say he is green have not been paying attention. Those who agree with me on this particular subject (Ward), you people know boxing, and I appreciate your intelligence. There are an abundance of Ward haters out there, or people who just simply aren't impressed. Notice how they stayed away from this thread as they could not possibly have any truthful input. Though Kessler may be his toughest fight, I think he will outpoint Kessler. Once that happens he will have finally caught the world's attention.
Don't be soft. Are you seriously trying to tell me that by widening the scope of countries represented from four to six (Canada and Romania) at the expense of an American even the Americans haven't heard of, would reduce viewing figures? In actual fact, being a very popular fighter in Canada, and as IBF champion, would have INCREASED the likelihood of him being invited, not reduced it.
People who agrees with you are intelligent?? What a load of crap... Everyone is intitled to there own opinion and if some people think Ward might be a little to green for this fight its ok.. right?? Its not being stupid to think Ward is green and Kesslers Experince + power will be to much for Ward. :nut
I don't over look Ward. However, it is a fact that the best fighter on Ward's resume' is Edison Miranda's shadow. Ward went 12 rounds with a badly damaged Miranda, but Pavlik, a smaller, and supposedly less skilled fighter, ran right the **** over prime Miranda. That does not bode well for Ward's chances against Kessler, Froch, or Taylor if JT has anything left. I do not over look Dirrell either, but the historical fact is, his best win was over one of Zuniga's left overs. If these two guys do well in this thing, they certainly would not be the first prospects who fooled me. (Hell, back in '06 I tuned into Pavlik/McKart to watch my boy Bronco put an ass whoopin' on some skinny mid western kid!) However, prospects and contenders fail at world class level far more often than they succeed.
Print that out and hang it on your wall. That will be the only boxing related statement from you that will ever make sense.
