I just watched the documentary yesterday and I'll admit I had some very ill feelings towards Resto before the documentary started. I always thought he knew something was wrong with the gloves, but there were times I could tell he wasnt telling the truth. I understand where Resto is coming from hes a club fighter on his way to becoming nothing in boxing, and Panama Lewis who was training world champion fighters took him in of all people he could have trained. It's sad to see Panama Lewis still working corners and I think its ridiculous hes trying to make a "comeback" knowing he'll never get his license back. He wont help Resto if he got a good job or anything. Great documentary
Maybe my post didn't come off like I wanted, was kinda flustered when I typed it last week. My point was that Panama and Resto were indirectly responsible for Collins's downfall and eventual death. They set the events in motion that led to it. :good
Interesting how he confronted Lewis, he was genuine unlike alot of other scenes where i felt he was faking somewhat.
Good documentary.......Resto definitely is the typical uneducated type that serves as a follower.......kind of like a gangbanger type that follows along and does'nt ask questions....... Panama plays the role of the ring leader, and Resto kind of the follower to run errands. You could see when Resto and Panama meet again after all those years in the documentary, Panama right off the bat dictating everything, "come here, give me hug.....thats my boy.".......ect..... Resto had planned on laying it on Panama for loading his gloves, but Panama changed Resto's demeanor right away just by the dominant way he speaks and just starts dictating....... Dont get me wrong, I believe Resto is scum as well for letting himself be used to do wrong to others......but I had to feel bad for him.....Resto was really battling himself and you could see that living with the Collins incident haunted him. When Resto meets Panama for a second time in the documentary, Panama again being dominant instructs Resto, "come give daddy a hug!" ......at which Resto fighting with himself with every sense and might that he has to refrain from giving in to Panama's instruction to go hug him...... ......Resto finally tells Panama, "No!" The looks on Panama's face was of bewilderment! He could'nt believe Resto had stood up to him and told him no....... Resto then tell's Panama everything that went on that night......"you took out the paddings. I know you did it, I saw you!" It was priceless seeing Panama squirm and his reaction to Resto telling him what was......and Resto finally getting that great big ****** off his back. ......and even after that......that meeting still ends with Panama trying to dominate Resto and Resto just doing what he had become accustomed too...... Panama something to the effect...."listen man, thats not true. I love you like a son.....yadda yadda yadda.....I'm working on a few things......when things come together and I come up with some money, I"m going to help you out you here...... ........and Resto's reaction after just moments earlier having dropped the big ****** off his back, instinctively notes back to Panama, "yeah, yeah." ......those yeah's by Resto just clearly describes Resto's relationship with Panama from the beggining, and its easy to see how and why Panama was able to get Resto to follow along and do whatever he said. Panama is a dictator, and the poor soul that is Resto just does'nt know anymore than to be a "yes" man. Thats just sadly's Resto's nature and he's doomed to follow that pattern till the day he's 6 feet under.:-( ......but if for just one moment, I'm glad to have seen Resto fight with himself, and confront Panama with the truth for at least that brief moment.
After seeing this I dont hate Resto as much anymore but it doesnt mean I forgive him. However my hate for Panama Lewis boiled even hotter after watching this documentary, and all that anger has trickled down to Pryor somewhat, because now I have no doubt in my mind that he cheated against Arguello.
Worst part was when Panama was blinged up talking about "Ill help you when Im good" what the hell does that mean.. Making it seem like he wil lthrow some money towards him..Then you got all those people wanting to shake this mans hand to this day..
Definitely the most depressing movie I've seen in a long time. Lewis shouldn't be allowed near gyms - much less fighters - ever again. A ****ing disgrace to the sport :verysad
Very good post. Exactly what I thought. I could almost tell Resto was lying at the beggining...when he confronts Panama first time you could see he was intimidated by Panama. Despite Panama being the trainer long time ago, you could tell Resto had a lot of respect or even admiration for Panama...he admits he was a great trainer, admits he saved his boxing career, probably really looked up to Panama. When Panama told him to drink this, put this plaster on, take the padding off your gloves, how can Resto say no? This is the man who took him on, saved his career, perhaps almost like a father figure to him, surely Panama knows best? IMO when Resto confronts Panama first time, asking Panama who fcked up those gloves, he wasnt really asking...he knew the answer...he just wanted Panama to come out with it and take some of the blame. This is evident when Panama makes fun of Resto behind his back at the bar...because they both know the answer hence why Panama was saying Resto was asking a stupid question. I thought it was disgusting how Panama said "hes like a son", "i cry inside when I see him cry" only to make fun of him behind his back. The last story Resto tells is the truth IMO...he looked and sounded liberated from it. Not only that, usually when you finally get the courage to get something out, it opens a gate and you tell more. This is what happened with Resto...they were only investigating the gloves yet Resto feeling liberated by the truth goes on to tell about all the crap, he knew about the gloves, he knew about the bottle, he knew about the plaster. Confronting Panama at the end of it you could tell Resto had new found confidence to talk to Panama. He wanted to say fcuk you, i've come out with it, youre going down with me. Not a case of "I didnt know you ****ed up my gloves, you should admit it" but more a case of "You told me to **** up my gloves, this is all your fault, admit it!". Very well done by HBO...great job on managing to get all of this out from Resto. Another thing, if you watch the video at the beggining...what does Resto first do when teh father shouts about his gloves? With a worried look in his face, he looks towards Panama...as if Panama is gonna come to the rescue...the guy had so much faith in him.
