Two of the dark horses in the competition IMO, but sadly one of them goes out here. 12 rounds, no reason no vote:good
Jose Torres resorts to boxing on the run, occasionally stopping to try to left hook with Qawi, but the shorter man is relentless, with the best that Jose can do failing to slow him down. A lot like Torres two fights with Dick Tiger, but Qawi's power is more pronounced. A unanimous 12 round decision for Qawi.
Qawi's superior infighting skill and workrate carry the day for him. Qawi by decision or late stoppage.
Now Torres, was a decent body puncher, and had his hands held high in the peek-a-boo fashion. Qawi would no doubt engage him, but Torres could box too. I favour The Camden Buzzsaw here, contrary to popular belief (on here at least) I don't think he shirked challenges once backed up by a puncher, I think the first fight with (admittedly young) Evander proved that. I don't think Torres has the 'fight changing' power to get someone as relentless as Qawi out there, Qawi over 12 no doubt.
To help; Torres; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaByAzGcSTs&feature=related Qawi; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72N1zpDIA0k
Qawi wins. he faced much more dangerous oposition. he was stopped only at 190 by holyfield , after a SD with him , and we all know what holyfield accomplished later. holyfield was a very HUGE 190. haye is considerred a very big , if not huge , 200 , so evander is the same size , just thinner , must be considerred that huge 190. qawi was also stopped by foreman in a fight he sufferred asthma , and was far from his original weight. that torres was stopped by a middleweight. qawi also went the distance with michael spinks in a fight spinks had to run , and we all know wht spinks achieved. qawi was about the same dry weight with him , and p4p much better. he twice stopped muhammad saad. stopped leon spinks. he must be the winner here.
Great fight, but Qawi wins. He was better and more complete than Torres. I think he stops Torres late.
Jose Torres had good all round skills. But, as it has been said Dwight Muhamamd Qawi was 'mass with class'. No LHW would be safe against the Camden Buzzsaw. Sure, Michael Spinks decisioned him. But Spinks was just about the best LHW champ of all time. Qawi clear UD Torres. Or maybe, he even stops Jose late. Though I would like to think that Jose would have enough smarts to last the distance.
Very good fight to watch, but i think it's a strength thing and Qawi would come good as the bout progresses. Think that Tiger beat him and i reckon Qawi would, as unfair as that assumption may be.
Is that really what people think? I find that a bit surprising. He twice took the fight to Saad Muhammad, who could hit as hard as any LHW ever, and outslugged him both times. He also beat other solid punchers like Rossman and Bull Martin. The only LHW that I ever saw get his respect was the ATG Spinks.
I'm pretty sure I've heard people use the Spinks fight and another to say that Qawi 'went into a shell early once he knew he could be hurt', which, mainly due to the evidence you cite, I have always found a ridiculous accusation. Qawi was tough as nails, no doubt.
