Joe Calzaghe interview from 2003 - saying he's being avoided

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by GrovesVDegale, Sep 14, 2009.

  1. Worldsport have posted an interview they did with Calzaghe from 2003 when Calzaghe was desperate to land a big name fight.

    Very interesting read.

I'd like to hear from all those who criticise Calzaghe for not fighting a big name during that period cos this doesn't sound like a man content with defending his title against nobodies.

It's also worth reading the interview/rant with Enzo Calzaghe - and it gives an insight into why him and Hopkins had so much to say to each other when they did finally meet 8 years later!!

    Here's the article:

the impression i got about calzaghe over the years was that he couldnt land any of the big name americans for quite a long time.

i remember him calling out james toney and saying something like they couldnt drag him out of his training camp at mcdonalds ^.^

I have much respect for Joe with or without the interview. The thing is the fight did not happen back then and even if two great fighters don't meet in their peak it doesn't have to be a bad thing per se. According to Enzo Hopkins was scared back then? Either he said that to provoke Hopkins and create a demand for the bout or he was just a bad business man... I mean Hopkins meet with Joe when he was old enough to be a gandpa. Joe Calzaghe may have wanted the fight more and credit to him for that at least!

I doubt it, Toney was at either cruiserweight or heavyweight for the whole of Calzaghe's supermiddleweight reign...

That's interesting. Really sheds some light on Calzaghe's desire to fight the best even back then. Bernard seems to pull that kind of crap all the time!! He's done it with Roy Jones for the last 10 years, Adamek recently , and Calzaghe back in 2003.

Joe's better than I gave him credit for!

Think the dates are wrong there mate, says the interview was in August 2000, but then the interview asks him about his last fight against Byron Mitchell was in 2003.

Well that is what he says, maybe, maybe not.

To get those fights he needed to go to the USA and fight.

I think if he wanted those fights enough he would of gotten them, then when he is well known he can be the one to make damands.

high risk low reward for Bernard and Roy..

I don't believe either side is at fault, it's just a shame.

The whole way matches are made needs to be looked at.
