KOing Marquez. Lets look at the reality of the situation. 1) Marquez has never been KOed in his 16 year career. 2) Mayweather's KO percentage is 62.5%. Not exactly a heavy hitter. 3) Mayweather has extremely brittle hands, even if he was trying to KO Marquez, one could forgive him if he didn't put in full effort for the KO. 4) Mayweather is a counter-puncher by nature. It just isn't in him to come forward and press the action. 5) Mayweather has been off for nearly two years and he still managed to execute a near masterpiece. I think if you cry about him not KOing a tough fighter like Marquez, you need more than a tissue or two. You need to stop watching boxing. 6) Mayweather started his career at 130. Stop whining about how Mayweather was so much bigger. Yes he was bigger, but he would have done the same at any lesser weight. Hell, he might have even gave Marquez more of a beating. Your dislike for a fighter personally, should not cloud your view of their in-ring performances.
I cannot argue with that one bit. Mayweather put on a master classic and took the number 2 ranked p4p fighter and made him look like an amateur. Any fan of the sweet science has to admire and respect the skills of Mayweather. I don't like his character or persona, but his skill level is something to behold and appreciate.
In the last 16 yrs JMM has NEVER faced anyone above 135. JMM was physically smaller......a lot slower and on the slide in terms of his physical reflexes. Floyd's nature isn't to press the action but that is where his biggest problems are in terms of getting the respect he wants as an "EXCITING" fighter. He never takes risks unless its against a guy who is offering no risk coming his way which is why he should have went for the KO over JMM. Floyd had nothing to worry about with Juan who was two steps slower at 144 and really couldn't hurt the bigger Mayweather. At a lesser weight where JMM's speed would have been a lot better and if this fight was two years ago Floyd woulnd't have had nearly as easy of a time. That is for sure. But given the circustances surround this fight, where it took place and the time it took place FLoyd did exactly what he was suppose to do against at 135 pound fighter who couldn't carry the extra weight up effectively. JMM never had a chance to really acclimate hismself to WW...no tune up fights or anything...he jumped right in there with one of the best fighters in this era. I love floyd but I call it how I see it. I loved the perfromance. IT was a great technical showing for FLoyd, but the win wasn't a great win considering who he ***uht and at what weight the fight was held. It wasn't a legacy builder for Floyd...moreso just a anther good name on his resume... i.e. Joe C's win over a 40 yr old Roy Jones....Still a good win but not Great.
1 - But he was dropped 4 times by Pacquiao, once by Barerra, and once by Floyd...not exactly like you can say he has an iron chin. Good survival skills, yes...good chin...not really. 2 - Mayweather is no heavy hitter, but he is capable, and if there was ever a time for him to make a statement, it was against Marquez. He should have at least tried a KO. 3 - He still has hand problems? I didn't hear that mentioned on the last few 24/7 shows... 4 - Like I said earlier...it was the chance to make a statement. He has came forward and pressed the action before, and against fighters way more dangerous than JMM. 5 - Off for 2 years, still looked sharp...absolutely. Nobody is crying that he didn't KO Marquez. I think people just wanted Floyd to do something exciting, which he rarely does. 6 - **** being bigger...the point is, he could have probably knocked JMM out, but didn't have the testicular fortitude to go for it...and he wonders why respect is so hard to come by for him... I actually DO like PBF, but just like Bernard Hopkins, I wish the man would take a few risks. I mean, if you are out-classing someone as thoroughly as he was out-classing the no. 2 P4P, why wouldn't you gain enough confidence to go for the KO?
thank you for covering the same points for the 1000th time in the last 2 days. i couldnt really see what the real truth is the first 999 times this was posted. now i am a believer. this ranks right up there with duran beating middleweights or ray beating hagler after a 3 yr lay off. who would have ever thought floyd could pull off the upset against such a formidable opponent. those damned welters should be thankful they are all beating each other or floyd might leave the monsters at lightweight and go after those welterweight pussies. ALL HAIL THE SAVIOUR OF BOXING!!!
Marquez was definetely much smaller than Mayweather. Anyone can see that. I am not denying the fact that Mayweather has the better set of skills. I knew the fight would be one sided not because of the skill, but for the simple fact that if you put on nearly 10 pounds of muscle you will be slower and tire faster, on top of all the other advantages Mayweather already had. Its simple science. In a lower weight division this fight would have been much more competitive. Simple pay day, and Im glad Marquez got paid as well. Mayweather needs to put those skills to a man his own size and weight division. He did not make 144 because obviously he is more comfortable at 147. So his last two fights Hatton, 140lber @ Mayweathers weight 147. Marquez, natural 135lber made him come up as well and did not even bother to meet him at the catchweight. Mayweather needs to fight the best in his new division and quit trying to clean out his old ones while still enjoying his new weight advantage. Dude is highly talented, but will he step up and play with the real welters?
dude, i didn't say he performed badly. he got the win that's all he had to do. i won't go into how well or not i think he did because my opinion on such is prize info. the only reason why the subject of floyd not scoring a k.o. is pertinent, and the reason why i did start a thread on it (can i spark a debate or what) is because in floyds own opinion that he stated in the first episode of 24/7 was that he should knock marquez out. so regardless of my thoughts of how he did or anyone elses for that matter, if floyd is true to his own word, he mustn't be satisfied with his own performance. nowhere in my posts have i ever stated wether i like floyd or not nor will i because a) nobody cares and b) it doesn't matter
i guess helps coming in 12 pounds heavier than your oponent when it comes down to trying to ko someone i just height the fact the referee didnt give at least a warning to floyd even when i saw him hitting marquez whit a combination of left hook left elbow
the other reason why floyd having the opinion before the fight that he should knock marquez out is... there are alot of his fans who eat up everything he, his dad, and roger say. tons of them ran out and bet on floyd to score it.
Why is this so hard to understand for some of you? Floyd is a defensive fighter, who is thinking defense first all the time. He doesn't take any unnecessary chances. Would a KO have been nice? YES! But a win is a win. If you ***gots don't like it, don't watch Floyd fight. Simple as that. You know what you're getting watching Floyd fight. How many big time KOs do you remember other great defensive fighters getting in their careers? Would you all be talking the same **** about Pernell Whitaker? Please name me one that got a KO in a huge fight. Let alone after a two year layoff.
If people want to criticize Floyd because they believe that he chose not to go for the KO that's fine. If you're just trying to knock his talent, or ability to finish then you have to do the same for Pac and Hopkins. Oscar Larios went up two weight classes to fight Pac fresh off a 3rd round stoppage(the third time he had been stopped in his career) and the fight went the distance. Pavlik went up two classes to fight Hopkins and went 12 as well.
