Firstly I must apologize for making yet another thread on weight classes. I know they are pretty common on here but I was running through a few calculations that hopefully some of you may find interesting. There are currently 17 weight classes and IMO that should not increase. There seems to be too many smaller classes so close together. The higher weight classes are by comparison miles apart. Then there is 200lbs to infinity which leads to talk of a "Super Heavyweight" division being added. It has been mentioned before that the best way to to space the divisions fairly is by a percentage of bodyweight. If we start by looking at at 105lbs to 108lbs, the difference is roughly 3%. If we continue that 3% increase through 17 divisions we would get something like this: 3% 105 108.15 111.3945 114.736335 118.17842505 121.7237778015 125.375491135545 129.136755869611 133.0108585457 137.001184302071 141.111219831133 145.344556426067 149.704893118849 154.196039912414 158.821921109787 163.58657874308 168.494176105373 As you can see we have only reached 168. This proves to me beyond doubt that there are "too many smaller classes so close together." 4% 105 109.2 113.568 118.11072 122.8351488 127.748554752 132.85849694208 138.172836819763 143.699750292554 149.447740304256 155.425649916426 161.642675913083 168.108382949606 174.832718267591 181.826026998294 189.099068078226 196.663030801355 Better but we only reach 196. 5% 105 110.25 115.7625 121.550625 127.62815625 134.0095640625 140.710042265625 147.745544378906 155.132821597852 162.889462677744 171.033935811631 179.585632602213 188.564914232324 197.99315994394 207.892817941137 218.287458838193 229.201831780103 Very interesting. 6% 105 111.3 117.978 125.05668 132.5600808 140.513685648 148.94450678688 157.881177194093 167.354047825738 177.395290695283 188.039008137 199.32134862522 211.280629542733 223.957467315297 237.394915354215 Just for fun this is 6% over only 15 divisions. Obviously another argument is where to start the divisions - 105/higher/lower and where the last division should start 200/220/240 etc. And yet another, how many divisions there should be? Of course you could choose where you wish to start and end. Then choose the number of divisions you want. Then devise an equal % from that, making your perfect formula. What do you guys think? Would it be a better if all divisions were separated by an equal percentage?
hmmm. interesting, you may have a point. but "the new 199.32134862522 Lb champion" just doesn't sound right to me.
I don't think any reasonably fit male is under 120lbs. There might be some really short and thin guys who are that light or lighter, but I don't think it's prevalent enough to have special categories.
I was going to mention that I couldn't be bothered to remove all the numbers after the decimal points! I forgot to and it is the first thing commented on!atsch
You are correct. There are too many weight classes at the lower wieghts. I think most would agree with you
i'm glad you left them there, it would keep the MC busy in the ring. seriously though, i think theres way too many lower weight classes.
5% - 14 Divisions. 120 126 132.3 138.915 145.86075 153.1537875 160.811476875 168.85205071875 177.294653254688 186.159385917422 195.467355213293 205.240722973958 215.502759122656 226.277897078788
It's the first time I've used one since I left school 9 years ago. It took me a while to work out how to use it. Then I think I got carried away!
c'mon, it's not the worst, i think evenly spaced divisions might not be a bad idea, i think you might see division hopping though, particularly at the higher end where it's not as common as the lower divisions at present. at least it would give bigger guys the chance to be a 5 weight world champion for example.
Seriously I've been reading this site daily since the build up to the Hatton V Mayweather fight. I registered 7 separate times, months apart before I finally received a confirmation email. What's up with that?:-(
