Say I'm a casual reader of many of the sport sites around the place and I hear about a Floyd Mayweather fight or a Vitali Klitchsko fight.

I go and read articles about these guys to learn more about them, more about boxing and the scene in general and I'm confronted with swaths of negative articles that focus only on the bad points, never the good.

I'm told via these articles that boxers no longer have heart, are all selfish, wouldn't last a single round against the boxers of yesteryear. I'm instantly going to be turned off of it.

In my view, you've got some of the best ever example of boxers available in this era, yet journalists are too busy criticizing what they haven't done rather than praise what they have.

Journalists need to pick their **** up, instead of complaining about the sky is falling, why not get out there and show the positive sides of boxing, the fact that boxing is truly global with the European, Asian and Mexican fighters now competing on a world stage with the American fighters.

More respect should be given to these guys who rise to the top of their craft, rather than pile **** on them because they're not black african americans with historical nostalgia on their side.

It's just a shame so many of the so called journalists that exist in boxing are completely selfish in their interest, lacking in their writing skills and unable to give impartial opinions about a fighter.

Very good post, I agree 100%

Shane Mosley said something similar in the Ring magazine issue with Wlad, Pacquiao,Juanma on the cover.

I agree in principle, I think in particular the lighter and middle weights are as talent rich as Ive ever seen, which is late 80s (well 90s watching seriously)
Heavyweights arent as bad as made out either, its mainly just US heavys that suck, though there are some decent ones there also

yep, some muppet who's meant to be one of the better ones just effectively called Vitali a bum. :-:)patsch but its just mirroring the overall state of the sport, years ago boxing attracted the best writers, the likes of Hugh Mcilvanny, cultural commentators like Mailor. Now the best writers have gone elsewhere and we're left with the fat dans and poof fishers, it just correlates with the level the sport is at.

Agreed. This "fight to save boxing" and other such bull**** has become a cliche, and it's not even close to being true. It creates bad publicity for no reason from ignorant morons.

Would it be better to condone something you know is blatantly wrong because it is in bad taste to wash your dirty linen in public?

I think the general public is much more intelligent than what you're suggesting. If boxing writers sugarcoat and basically lie about fighters not manning up or whatever it is they're beefing about, don't you think that after the casual fan is lured into boxing that he won't find out about these things on his own? And then boxing will be in a much worse situation than before, when even a mass media publicity effort won't merit a second look from these same casual fans who are now on to the conning efforts of the whole boxing establishment.

Nope, the boxing writers who choose to lie for the bottomline are what hurts boxing, not the other way around.

A great example is Jones vs Toney that fight reminds me of Pac vs DLH. Toney was totally drained in that fight and if there was message boards at that time im sure most would of said that. But now lots of fans says Roy took Toney to school without knowing the details and treat it as a great win.

'he whooped the p4p pound best' etc*

    * I think RJJ would of beaten James anyway but u get my point.

Arreola was a joke, guys like Peter & Arreola who show up fat & out of shape for world title bouts hurt boxing.

Nostalgia helps them remember that time.

Because the same criticisms existed in that era as they do today, they just weren't written about as the sole reason to write an article in boxing.

    Floyd vs Marquez, P4P #2 fighting former P4P #1 - yes, that's such a horrible matchup.

Vitali vs top rated undefeated contender with 24 kos in 27 fights? yes, that's such a horrible matchup.

Punishing Floyd and Vitali for being dominant makes about as much sense as ****ing for virginity.
