Until the guy loses, he doesnt need to change a damn thing. Hes a multi weight division champ who has fought some great fighters and has found a way to go 40-0. Why would you even bother to question what they are doing in the ring with his resume?

I can see where stinky gloves is coming from. Boxing is fighting, your there first and foremost to hurt your opponent...to do that you have to expect to get hit. For example, would you rather watch a fighter take 1 shot and land 2 shots, or take 0 shots and land 1? The first option is more entertaining, although i can see why fighters would opt for the latter...both score the same points IMO.

Question though, if a guy gets hit 20 times but lands 100, would that be better than a guy who gets hit a 100 times but land 200 of his own? Sure the second guy got hit about 5 more times, but he inflicted twice the damage...this is a hurting sport first and foremost.

See your point, but if same end result of a win, why take more punishment then necessary? Just not smart. And until Floyd loses a fight by possibly being too defensive, no one can have a valid point that hes afraid to be hit and it cost him a victory. And "afraid" is the wrong term. Its "unnecessary" to be hit when you have defense that great.

Mayweather does what he does because it's the easiest route and the safest route to a victory for him.

He has a better reflex-speed combo than any of the guys he faces and so when it comes to a game of tiggy, it's just a game that favours him.

Whilst Mayweather's style is highly effective, I do think that he comes off looking like a coward sometimes. He hyper-reacts to the threat of punishment. The way he covers up almost makes him look scared to get hit sometimes.

People might say it's simply because his defense is so good, but I think it bespeaks his mentality too. He doesn't like taking risks, he wants the path of least resistance and he's not about to put himself out on a limb for fan entertainment or to prove his macho-ness.

Someone like Whitaker, if you watch the way he defends himself, it's totally different to Floyd. He INVITES danger, he PUTS himself in dangerous positions and sometimes he even LETS his opponents hit him to show them that he can take anything they have and then he goes about belittling them with his skills. Whitaker will stand in there and land 400 punches and take a couple hundred in return, it doesn't matter to him that he gets hit so long as he is working his man over in the meantime.

For that reason, I find Whitaker much more pleasurable to watch, and even when he utterly schools his opponent, I still get a kick out of watching his craft. With Mayweather, I appreciate his speed, athleticism and reflexive abilities, but watching him fight is a bore.

I have no problem with boxers who protect themselves. Is there hoverer
in the Floyd case something more ... like a fear from the first lose?

Floyd aint popular much among fans, he knows the only reason
people come to watch him and the only reason he is getting big
fights is because his undefeated record. And in most cases people
come to watch his fights not because they want to see him winning
but they wanna see him lose it. So after his first lose he will never
get any big fight and most probably he will fade into Bolivian ala Tyson :D

Remeber, its all about the $$$ with Floyd. The less hits he takes, the longer his potential career will be. Nothing wrong with that. Hes smart when it comes to working the boxing system and milking it for what its worth. Hell, he got to 40-0, think he should be able to.

    Stupid comment...

Then SRR, SRL, Duran, Hearns, Hagler, Chavez, Trinidad, Ali, Foreman all should have been in MMA...What a stupid comment.

Mayweather is in the minority in his style. All those fighters I mentioned took risks to beat and KO their opponents.

That is what Mayweather will most likely be remembered for, his defense and how difficult it was for a fighter to land clean on him.

I don't believe so, for the fact that I have seen PBF get hit cleanly before yet very seldom have I seen him get clearly hurt by a punch.

DLH landed I think 82 power shots on PBF in there fight at 154. He did stumble vs Hatton but that was more due to off balance as if he was really hurt he would have dropped as his legs would have given out rather then be the reason he was able to stay up.

If anyone gets hit in the spot the Roy Jones did vs Tarver they are going down.

I don't really believe that PBF would go down to a single shot, but he would have to get hit numersous times and beat'n down to the ground. But since his defense is so good I don't beleive anyone would be cappable of landing multiple power shots at once on him. Unless they landed a Tarver esp punch on his lower chin that made his knees give out and mind non responsive givening his oppnents free reign.

He engaged Castillo, fought from inside the pocket, hit and got hit, won the fight, and has spent the rest of his career being told he lost the fight, that it was a controversial decision, that he got hit too much and was bullied, and blah, blah, blah....he learned that it's easier to win convincingly by landing 20 out of 30 punches a round and taking only 7 out of 50 than by making an exciting fight and having people turn around and claim it was much closer than it was. Casual fight fans are ****ing morons and I'm glad he learned not to try and please them.

He also has fairly brittle hands and has found a way to keep winning while throwing relatively few punches, probably because he has less chance of damaging them again. If he TOOK more punches he would have to throw more punches and increase that risk.

He isn't hyper-defensive because he's afraid of getting hit...he wouldn't box if that was the case and he has never responded to a clean shot with anything other than a willingness to keep fighting. He is hyper-defensive because he doesn't want to give his opponent (i.e. Castillo) a chance to take the round simply because he landed a couple of meaningful punches while being systematically counter-punched.

This debate will go on and on untill someone beats floyd:deal

the truth is he's not scared of getting hit its just .....

    HE TAKES NO RISKS !!!!!!!!

floyd knows his defence is stellar and if he fights safe he probably will
    never get beaten :deal

We know floyd LOVES and fights for MONEY

if he was beaten even in a close fight or a shock ko
he would loose his NO.1 personality
which is his only selling point to earn money really :deal:deal:deal:deal
floyd uses this over and over again to earn the lions share of the purse
if he loses that he will get a smaller pay day against crowd pleasing hero's
    like hatton or pacquiao
Floyd is simply TERRIFIED TO LOOSE
if he looses his '0' he looses all of his other buisness deals outside of
boxing like wwe and reality shows
and thats why he takes no risks :deal

If "most" fans want to see Cotto or Pac, why does Mayweather sell more than both of them?

Mayweather is a minority in his style because he is one of the few with the athletic ability, keen boxing sense, and reflexes to box like he does. If you are as defensively-sound as Floyd is, and can turn your offense to defense like he does, why not?

No one else in boxing at the moment is as technically sound as Floyd. Why stand there and trade punches when you can counter-punch and slip away before being hit??? The latter will score you many more points on the scorecards.
