Agreed. Another way to put it is that whilst Pea MAY be able to find a way to survive, he'd never win a decision. I think that's safe to say against Hearns.
Depends on who showed up . If the Motor city cobra showed up i like tommy by decision. If the Hitman shows up I like tommy by mid rounds. Hearns might be the only guy id pick to knock out pernell this is just not a good matchup for Pernell in fact TOmmymight the only guy from lt to jm that id pick to not have a tough time with pernell, even Leonard and Duran would have their hands full.
I dont think Whitaker would be scared shitless of anyone, despite his defence 1st style, he was quite fearless.... I do however agree with the rest of your statement, the Pea that fought Vasquez would be brutalized by peak 154 lb Hearns... no shame there, Tommy is most fighters nightmare.
He could do it, but he'd need to land something huge, imo. I don't know if Tommy could land consistently enough to break him down.
Well Hearns and Leonard did have trouble with Benitez and Wilfredo was a good defensive fighter but Sweet Pea was a step above defensively...Still there was a size factor he would have to overcome with hearns and a speed factor with Leonard
Both great fighters..... two completly constrasting styles...but i have thought about this long and hard...... at first i thought look pea is hard to hit so UD but the more i think about it the more you look at Hearns power, reach and height the more you say stoppage....so am gunna say Hearns TKO 8-10..... I do love both fighters though and it is no disrespect to pea to say he would get stopped by hearns
This is a total mismatch at this weight, and yes I'd pick Hearns to stop him. Whitaker just didn't look that good against Vasquez, not to mention he was kinda pudgy. Benitez would've beaten him at this weight as well.
I think Tommy would get him out of there, especially if he went to the body as he started to do more often at 154/160. The body can't move after all.
I voted yes to Tommy getting the T/KO but it would not shock me if Pernell went the distance, he did go a full 12 with Trinidad while being very past prime.
Hearns 6' 1".......78 inch reach Whitaker 5' 6"......69 inch reach Bombshelters can not be installed in the ring per WBC regulations.
Horrible referee...horrible. 6-7 punches after Hurtado was already out and held up by the ropes. Could've killed him. Reminds me of Emile Griffith vs. Benny Paret. Whitaker showed he had very little class here. Hurtado knocked down Whitaker 4-5 times in that fight.
Total mismatch, but I think Pernell would have found a way to survive. He survived a severe beatdown by Tito while he was on the crackpipe.
