Thoughts on Antonio Tarver?

His wife is hot, Its good to see a black celebrity with a black woman. And Tarver was a find champion, well spoken and a credit to the black race. So he made excuses when he lost? And is he the only fighter who did that? All fighters make up excuses when they lose, nothing is wrong with that but the man was a still a really good fighter who would of been better if he started his career earlier.

Not a fan of Tarver ... but he's a solid fighter ... no one can take anything away from Antonio Tarver_

He beat alot of good fighters and lost to some very solid fighters ... Dawson, Hopkins, Jones, Johnson ... (the lost to Johnson, Johnson, Harding, and Jones were avenged) 3-time world champion ... olympic bronze medalist ... made alot of money and has a moment in the spotlight.

 

Not one of my fav's, but was glad to see him shut Roy up, which I didn't think was possible.

 

Save your time. Anyone who really values boxing without having a bias hatred for RJJ knows he doesn't have a glass jaw, he has gotten hit multiple times against a young Hopkins, other SMW's, LHW's, and a Full fledge Heavy with pretty decent power and this is on a guy who started his career at Jr Middle.

 

Good fighter. Worked hard every single training camp, developed well rounded classic boxing skills, and felled the closing thing to Super man the world knew at the time with a perfect counter punch.

Doesnt matter what happens to him, or how his life goes. He was the first man to pancake the planets best fighter. And that will always be his accomplishment to cherish.

 

Decent commentator. That's literally the nicest thing I can say about him.

Other than "adequate thespian...in the context of a Rocky film".

 

Agreed...couldnt have said it better myself. As far as Tarver again, definitely a solid fighter, and an even better commentator! He is actually quite good at commentating, definitely an articulate guy.

 

The problem with Tarver is that he started his career late, but you have to give him his due, he's a good boxer and made the most money out of his career.

 

I met Tarver at the MGM Grand during the Trinidad-Wright fight. He was gentleman enough to sit at our table to a have a quick meal before the fight. Also took pictures and signed autographs. Tarver is actually a cool guy. Most of the outlandish things Tarver says is for the camera. How he is person compared to what we see on television are two different Tarvers.

but i was told (in the classic forum) that tarver stopped harding at their 2nd encounter because harding came back from an injury.
also worth mentioning in tarver's resume is mohamed benguesmia (the first to stop O'neil Bell and a former amateur) .

tarver had a good chance against any former lhw , maybe against charles , walcott , spinks his chance was not so good , but against almost all the rest his chance was great.
only idiots could give woods a realistic chance against him , and as i see , there are many here.

Definitely a good fighter. Also known as Roy's real dad. "You got any excuses tonight Roy" Then boom KO'd in 2. Badass, and I'm a Roy fan.

 

A good fighter, top LHW in his time, who had Roys number. But I still feel he was there at the right place at the right time when he faced Roy. He beat Roy in the amateurs. Their first pro fight could've gone either way, I think Roy pulled it out. The punch he knocked Roy out with in the rematch wasn't a lucky punch, it was just a good well-timed punch. I feel Roy could have beaten him in the 3rd fight if he had the confidence to do so. Tarver beat some good opposition besides Roy, but never was consistent.

 

Gotta give credit to Tarver, a pretty damn hard fighter to beat at 100%. In the love with Roy Jones Jr., people including me underestimated Antonio and said a lot of bull**** about his personality, but in reality, he was a very charismatic guy, just never built up as a star (and what difference can it make).

His career is a hit & miss from divisional history standpoint, he should've never lost to Harding, because if he had won, who knows what would've happened vs. Roy Jones back then. I've been pointing this out for years: Tarver by far was the biggest challenge for Roy in years, HW trip or not, Tarver's combination of CW size, power, his skills, style and incredible determination to avange his amateur loss would've caused major troubles to Roy, who, let's be real, those days was cherry picking opponents. And when Tarver had the chance to be the mandatory, he lost to Harding.

Too bad Antonio started his pro career rather late and in an era dominated by Roy Jones and Dariusz Michalczewski, because when he beat Roy years later, "but he was shot for Chrissakes" was boxing fans response instead of "good job, Mr. Tarver, Holy ****, you beat Roy Jones!"

Anyway, I'd love to see Tarver replacing that idiot Kellerman or Lennox Lewis, he'd be a badass HBO commentator.
