Ali. I can't think of another boxer who sold his name for 50M$ 30 years after his career.

Tyson overtook Ali albeit dubiously. Mostly due to his exploits out of the ring.

Right at this moment in time, I would definitely say Ali.
Certainly not at the time, but he is now!
Wheras Tyson, rightly or wrongly, still has a pretty negative image.

Ali - people died knowing Ali and never knowing who Tyson was. This thread doesn't take much thought. It's Ali and then Tyson. Then everyone else is arguable.

on this board i did a survey on who got them started on boxing and a clear majority of the ESB board members starting watching boxing not because of Ali and Rumble in the Jungle.

they started watching Boxing because of Tyson because most that are here on this board of are a younger generation.

i think it was about 80% answered Tyson got them into boxing.

As it seems to me, some are mixing things up: it's about who is the most widely known, not who is the most loved one.
It is Mike Tyson. He is the most popular in America, Asia, probably Europe. In Africa, it should be Ali by a wide margin. Not sure about Australia, probably Tyson.

Keep telling yourself that. Tyson would smother Ali, confuse him, and knock him flat on his draft-dodging ass.

    Infamous rather than famous maybe!

Ali - and Ali by such a huge difference that nobody has ever reached anything like the same level of popularity world-wide.

Joe Louis would probably be second.

If it is indeed most widely known rather than popular as it says in the thread title, Tyson would be a close seocnd to Ali in terms of world-wide popularity.

The younger crowd doesn't understand the Ali thing, but it's Ali by a landslide.

Tyson is a distant second compared to the level Ali reached.
