That was the last segment of Bunceys Boxing Hour on BBC London on Thursday night and it left me in a very pissed off mood afterwards. I am gutted for wee Choi, he is one tough little warrior who has not been given a break. His previous trainer couldnt get him a fight after the Matthews fight, hence Choi went home to Mongolia. Then Ciaran and Spencer bring him back and get him fights but his old manager apparently will not play ball and release him etc. This type of thing should not be allowed. T he BBoC need to look at cases like this and perhaps legislate for it. In football, correct me if I am wrong, if a player does not get play time for a sustained length of time i.e including the reserves, then they can ask to get out of their contract. Something similar needs to be introduced in boxing, as boxers deserve more rights, they are the ones taking the punches.
what exactly went wrong for him? Someone give me the low-down, always heard small things but the complete journey why his career didn't fly off!
Look at Shinny Bayaar, his fellow Mongolian, also with Jack Doughty. He applied for British citizenship and was made mandatory challenger for the British belt. I don't know why Choi didn't use the same strategy. Like Choi, Shinny was much-avoided, but becoming a British citizen means the Board will force people to fight him. If Shinny wins, and keeps winning, he will eventually get a shot at the EBU belt--which would then get him a world ranking. So doors will open. But perhaps Choi didn't want to become a British citizen? Anyone know...?
Choi was inactive for over a year since he destroyed Derry Matthews in 5 rounds in 2008 (Matthews was 20-0 at the time, and full respect to him for taking the Choi fight as a lot of guys were ducking him). His old manager in Oldham couldnt get him fights, so Choi flew back home to Mongolia to retire. Spencer tracked him down and persuaded him to come back. Listen to the video on the opening post to learn more about his time with Spencer. Choi was fighting in 10 rounders from his 2nd fight, when he travelled he 'lost' to a couple of dubious decisions. The only, arguably, 'real' loss on points was to Veeraphol Sahaprom, which was Choi's 3rd fight (Sahaprom was 20-1 at the time and won a world title 3 fights later). Boxing fans and boxers complain when they see a hand picked exclusive club who appear to get the breaks, complete with a padded record, guys like Choi are not afforded such luxuries.
Interesting, and I agree with you, it sounds like a plan, no idea why Choi didnt apply for citizenship.
