mentacougar, i hope you are right. he spent the last 2 rounds stumbling around trying to avoid geting droped and instead of protecting himself he gets in a swinging match when hurt. i could see that happening if he was way behind on the cards and needing a ko but he was obviously ahead on the cards, hurt and completely gassed. there was an obvious lack of preparation from him and his team. lets just hope thats all it was.
bandeedo, it could be that he had never been in such a desperate situation and he kind of panicked! happens alot to young fighters, world class or journeymen. it's called being in survival mode. now that he's been taken to these altered states he'll know what he did wrong and will correct it next time. i once knew this young guy in his 20's who was a very good martial artist. he was a brown belt, won some tournaments and did almost everything flawlessly. one night he was in a bar in the philippines (olongapo city) and some drunk marines came in and started whaling on him. do you know what he did? he went into the fetal position because in a time of panic he totally forgot everything he had learned in karate. who knows, maybe this might have happened to juanma tonight but you've got to give him credit for surviving and going on to victory. just another learning experience for a young boxer.
People are expecting a KO or domination. He had a streak going there at one stage time to step back to reality. He can't KO everyone and certainly won't dominate everyone.Matgwa wasn't bothered with his punches and he ask the youngster questions.
him looking less than spectacular is not the problem, him barely surviving is the problem. aside from showing a lot of heart and will to survive, tell me what you saw in this fight that says he is as good as advertized.
true true Dunno mate.I wasn't impressed at all.Apart from the 1st round KO streak.I have never been excited about this kid. :?
I haven't seen the fight yet but we know that Mtagwa has a crazy chin. Gamboa has been put down 4 times ? And Caballero has been KO'd before i think. What i dont understand is how he gassed out, when he threw over 1000 punches against Penelosa??
He completely underestimated him, and I am 100%sure he didn't train for this fight and it showed. He fought a stupid fight, but he showed heart and a will to finish the fight standing so I guess if anything positive can be taken out of this fight is that this was a good learning experience.
I hope you are right but i got a feeling that he wouldnt learn nothing, i am pretty done with him, people are trying to make him something hes not, yes he defeated Ponce De Leon in impressive fashion but besides that what have he done?
Sometimes you loose more winning, as this is the case with Juanma.Cotto got more respect in his defeat against Margarito than Juanma is hes win against Mtagwa The only way he can rebound and change hes somehow tainted career is defeating Caballero or Gamboa.
I'd say he needs to defeat both, like I said it needs to be a huge 2010 for him. Bob Arum better pair them up or he will lose his investment big time.
Hard to say because it is hard for us to keep up with fighters that we don't see. Obviously this was a very important fight for him so we have no idea how much this was just a matter of heart for him. As posted earlier. Time will tell but it is nice to see a display of heart from two fighters.
