IMO, cotto landed punches but he did not commit to offense as much as he should've. He was relying on his movement and minimizing the damage. However, Mosley knew his chin can take anything Margo can dish out, and he threw his punches with the intention of knocking Margo out.
And.... Cotto had serious power at 140, but at 147 I haven't seen much evidence of it. The talking heads of HBO repeat over and over again how Cotto is the most powerful WW, yet he fails to hurt his opponents. Margarito was practically smiling at him as he took his best shots. Margarito didn't do much smiling when Mosley hit him.
i really think that cotto is a warrior 4 wanting a rematch w margarito but, if cotto wins a rematch, and they have a trilogy i see less oportunity to cotto in a fight w floyd... and mosley can knock cotto out.
The difference is the level of competition there is at welter right now. There are 4 guys if you include Pac on the top 10 p4p list. Marg, Mosley, Clottey the guys he didn't stop, and you should understand why Cotto is not knocking guys out.
Good post, ever since I saw Cotto face Mosley I've tought of him as the harder puncher even after Cotto lost to Margo and Shane ko'd him. Regarding the thread, I don't think it's fair to attribute it all to Cotto, after all you can't deny Shane fought one hell of a fight to be able to stop Margo, and the accumulated damage should also be attributed to the other tough fighters who hit Margo cleanly many times also.
If you watch the fight closely you'll see Clottey got tagged hard and was very weary of being caught with a hard counter shot in a way I had never seen him before, not even when Baldomir stunned him. Judah was not low-blowed repeatedly into suvmission, outside of the rough round where Judah got tagged low Cotto beat him to the punch fair and square. Margarito's head was snapping like a speed bag and althugh he said Cotto his faced harder punchers than Cotto he never said he doesn't really hit hard. Quintana was also stopped and he was a very legit opponent at the time. Gonez and Jennings although overmatches had never been stopped before. Being strong and a hard puncher doesn't mean you'll knock out everyone, it means that's one of your strenghts and even if you don't knock them out your punches do more damage than the usual and opponents think more about not getting hit with you which also translates into opponents who risk less opportunities in order to give you less openings.
Who has knocked out Mosley, Clottey and Margo? Only one is Margo by Shane. So, its safe to say he fought the three toughest bearded SOB's in the welter division. Cotto's power is not devastating, but intimadating enough to make you think. Who at welter is a devastating puncher might I ask?:huh
Obviously true! Cotto was not setting down on his punches and Mosely was. I said it all along had Cotto stopped and dug in and took it to him Margo would have gotten KTFO!
