Good question. It's a shame this tournament wasn't made when Calzaghe was around. I'd be VERY suprised if Froch won this tournament, because I've never rated his skills that highly, although he does have the heart of a champ!

Froch won't ever have the same kind of skill Calzaghe did, and if he goes on to beat the likes of Kessler then how can we put him above Calzaghe when he did the same thing?

Kessler, Sheika, Woodhall, Reid were all in their prime. Hopkins went on to smash Pavlik and is looking better than ever after Calzaghe beat him.

 

Kinda just depends on how the action plays out.

If he beats everyone convincingly, with some showing of skill, then he has to be up there.
But if he wins contentiously, then no. He needs to do so after the contest as well, and unify the titles.

But let's not get too way ahead of ourselves, as I think Kessler can and will win the series.

Listen, Hopkins was never a power fighter, never a speedster, he relied on ring experience, at 43, he was maxed on experience therefore prime, he waas also p4p 3.. he destroyed a top 10 p4p undisputed champ in Pavlik, and but for Pac and Mayweather, he would hold the title of P4P 1 king current day! HE IS PRIME!

Calzaghe forced him into cheating, he smashed him for 9 of the 12 rounds, he was bloated, shot, brittle hands, fighting on foreign soil for teh first time, and was hindered by that idiot Cortez, while getting butted through the fight.

RJJ was virtually prime, look what he did to Lacy, and Lacy took Taylor to the trenches and dropped him, Calzageh busted RJJ up so bad it was unreal, but RJJ schooled Trinidad before that, and in the Calzaghe fight retained all his speed and power.

Eubank was in the twighlight of his career, but still faced a very green Calzaghe, and got floored by Joes punch power, Eubank barely lost to carl Thompson, and would have beaten must SMW of that day.

the difference between calzaghe and froch is thus: id confidently pick jc to beat all 3 of those guys,i cannot say the same for froch,though froch is still my favourite active fighter.

he was 30 years old for christ sake,you only have to see his pre and post calzaghe fights to know he was far from shot,he arguably beat steve colins in one of those fights and would have gone on to beat thompson (a much fresher version than the one who ko'd david haye) had it not been for the freak eye injury,he was schooling him at times..

eubank was in training for a fight at the time and was in freakish condition,calzaghe dropped the iron chined eubank twice and manhandled him like no fighter ever came close to doing in a gritty but wide ud..

For one, Calzaghe has already beaten the favourite going into the tournament in Kessler. Hopkins was P4P #3 when Calzaghe fought and beat him, he fought Eubank and beat him whilst still being green and he beat a Roy Jones, who whilst not being his old self has proved he can still do it as he showed in his last fight destroying Jeff Lacy (another man Calzaghe beat who was considered the 'Mike Tyson' of his weight and was going to walk over Calzaghe, which didn't happen).

If Froch goes unbeaten in the tournament and wins it, which I can't see him doing, then well done to him. But he won't overtake Calzaghe and he'll never be considered the better fighter.

 

Froch has wins over Robin Reid, Brian Magee and Tony Dodson all inside the distance. So domestically he was pretty good anyway, very impressive. He would have fought Calzaghe if he had the chance.

Froch beat an excellent undefeated challenger in Jean Pascal, who has not lost since and has won the WBC 175lbs title. Looking impressive. This gives an indication of how good Froch is. He is World Class no doubt.

Froch beat the former Undisputed middleweight champion in America. Taylor beat Hopkins twice and Lacy. This compares with what Calzaghe did to the same opposition.

If Froch beats Dirrel and Taylor beats Abraham, then Froch's stock rises even further because his two best win opponents will still be fighting at the highest levels.

If Froch wins the tournament he will be one of the greatest UK fighters ever.

i say yes hands down but because i think calzaghe is hands down a better fighter than froch anyday i'll be very, very surprised if froch reaches the final.

 

you cant use faded fighters do defend calzaghe.
the only reason calzaghe gets so much stick is because of what he didnt do.

its interesting you mention kessler though because if kessler does win this that will be the best thing that ever happened to calzaghe's legacy.

until he does kessler hasn't yet proven how good he is.
