Hopkins - worked over?? Calzaghe didn't hurt him at all at any stage. That cannot even be argued. Calzaghe hardly landed on him never mind hard enough to hurt someone with a proven quality chin. Calzaghe made Jones look amateurish and slow?? So did Tarver and Johnson. Years ago. Don't be fooled by Jones's wins over cherrypicked declining opposition like Trinidad and Lacy. Jones would not beat any top fighters in his weight class. This will be re-proven if he ever fights one again. Calzaghe did not have Kessler visibly hurt, wobbling, or on the brink of a knockdown at any point. He may have hurt Kessler with a bodyshot, but none of the other punches he landed carried sufficient power to make any inroads towards a stoppage or even a KD. Again, this is indisputable. I have no idea why you would attribute Calzaghe's perceived lack of power to his nationality. I don't recall many comments on this forum about Valero or JM Lopez or Arthur Abraham having no power, nor many comments in the Classic about Arguello or Fitzsimmons or Benvenuti having no power either. What's the common denominator?? These guys have great power, and Joe never had. He had decent power, but no better. I could be wrong, but I don't think Joe ever had a clean KO in a world title fight? I think it was all accummulation TKOs, and I think his KO ratio in world title fights was less than half? Joe was a top fighter, and he had many great qualities, but power simply wasn't one of them.
A stoppage is a stoppage. Whether you can't continue due to fatigue or concussion is irrelevant. Bernard faked the low blow to buy time so he wouldn't get stopped. (On his second try, the American ref didn't buy it). It's certainly not a given that he would have been stopped without those tactics, but the fact that he had to resort to them, tells us that HE thought he'd better. Bad enough losing to a white boy, but getting stopped by a white boy would have been worse. And IMO, Joe carried his buddy Roy for the last few rounds, just as Roy carried his buddy Tito.
:huh Do you know how Compubox works? It's two or three guys with pads like PlayStation pads sitting clicking them whenever it looks like a punch lands. It is no more scientific than you sitting at home drawing a tally mark on a piece of paper with a pen while watching it on tv. Compubox numbers are a nice little gimmick to make the tv coverage look more polished and professional, but any boxing fan knows they are completely and utterly meaningless. This doesn't just go for the Calzaghe-Hopkins fight of course, it goes for any and every fight. Two or three guys clicking control pads have no idea if a punch just missed someone, or grazed him. They have no idea if a punch hits a shoulder or a forearm or the side of the head. They have no idea if three quick light punches to the sides of the head in a clinch hurt far less and were therefore far less significant than one very hard bodyshot to the liver. And I could go on and on. There is no way to measure punching in a boxing match, the sport doesn't allow it. They should abolish Compubox completely, and simply concentrate on watching the ****ing fights and using their brains. But it's a nice little gimmick for the tv audience, so they keep it. And it is clearly worth it, since chaps such as yourself place such stock in it even when the numbers are often clearly, clearly erroneous.
Constant hand problems and i think his punching style. The way he throws his punches(slapping style) also does not help. But hes also not a power puncher, hes a volume puncher.
Not necessarily. I can easily see how it could have been scored either way. I can see why someone would have scored it for Calzaghe, as he did force the action and he was the more active. It is a mark of what a dreadful fight it was that Calzaghe was a valid winner when he landed so desperately few clean punches. Conversely, I can see why someone would score it for Hopkins too. He scored a KD, he had one other eye-catching combination which landed flush, he dictated the pace, and did some clean, effective work. It was such a god-awful fight that I find myself consumed with apathy over the result - for me neither man performed well at all or emerged with much credit.
I was just tryin got make the point that Calzaghe did land on Hopkins. Which he did. You said something like he 'barely' landed. Which is false.
Calzaghe has punching authority in either hand but what made him so difficult to outpunch was volume instead of punching power impact itself, everybody should know this through the Mitchell 30 punch final combo, the 12 round fight with Lacy, the affair with the trio Kessler, Hopkins and Jones. Still I would say that he was a pretty hard hitter or else Eubank, Veit and others wouldn't just found a seat on their trunks that soon in their fights, seems obvious to me... Criticism should arise from Joe's awkward technique, punching with the inside of his gloves and winding his punches to make the most of punch stats to win rounds, it's fair someone would always say that he slapped or pitty-patted... Doesn't matter, still one of the best european fighters of all time along with Marcel Cerdan.
Joe's a featherduster, thats why... i'm a fan too but lets be real, he couldn't crack cement with a jackhammer
I disagree. I think he barely landed. I have the fight on dvd. I think there was a real scarcity of clean punches landed by either man throughout the entire fight. Watch it again, and try not to be a fan. You will see.
I am not fooled by Jones' wins over Trinidad and Lacy but Tarver and Johnson didn't make Jones look amateurish and slow, they beat him and knocked him out but didn't make him look amateurish and slow.... go re-watch the fights. Also you mentioned he didn't have Kessler hurt, then you say he may of hurt him with a body shot.... either he hurt him or not and I for one thought he looked hurt, both from ringside and when watching at home on numerous occasions. Also Kessler admitted he was hurt, it doesn't have to be a head shot to count as it hurting. Joe threw his hard shots to the body later in his career due to his fragile hands, he didn't really throw bombs to the head very often after he started having hand problems.
But how does Calzaghe making Jones look amateurish and slow have anything to do with punch power anyway? :huh Seems a pretty irrelevant comment considering the subject of your thread. And I do believe Tarver made Jones look amateurish at points. Tarver made him look old, tired, amateurish and shot. Johnson made him look knocked the **** out. Both KO'd better versions of Jones than Calzaghe was unable to even drop, never mind KO. What does that say to you?? Kessler was not even close to being dropped at any point. I don't see how failing to wobble someone is concrete proof of power?? If Joe had Kessler holding on, or staggering around, or retreating while doubled over, or on the floor, or KO'd, then bringing it up would have some merit. But none of these things happened, so that fight is not a good indicator of power at all.
