I will hold my hands up - I have frequently written the guy off as merely a "second name" marketing hype job and little else.

After struggling to gain a decision against natural super featherweight Oisin ***an in his fifth fight I thought to myself that this guy isnt going anywhere.

But since the turn of 2008 he has genuinely turned up the heat and stepped up the level of opposition including two good wins against Vanda even a couple of good knockout victories.

So is he deserved of the derision that he recieves of is he slowly gaining some respect?

He's being kept safe and tailor made to very exact specifications.

Yes he is under rated but he does not beat david lopez, angulo or cintron all 3 of them should get a shot a martinez's belt first

i think by 2010 chavez jr. should be fighting top 15 opponents already. i might be the only one to think he's ready for better competition now! say what you will about his opponents to date but the man is undefeated and seems to be improving slowly. right now i think the jr. middleweight is a pretty weak bunch and i definitely think he can win a title next year. i think julito is going to surprise alot of people next year.

He is being spoon feed, it is hard to tell how good he really is.

Wow. I don't think 154 is weak AT ALL as a division.

For the question, it'd be great if he turned out to be a real champ but I just don't see him as being elite ever. I question whether or not he even gets a title. But I'd be happy for the Chavez family if he did.

This guy is overhyped. His father made him a fighter cuz he's damn broke, he spent all his money on tequila.

Well, there are two ways to look at this. One is that the kid is essentially getting his experience fighting a bunch of Tijuana taxi drivers like his old man did, and that by doing this, he will hone his skills and make an impact.

The other way, to which I tend subscribe to, is that he's being fed a bunch of stiffs so that they can pad his record and cash in on the name recognition in a big money fight.

i'll be one of the few to say i believe he will become a great champion, i know there many haters on here and they think chavez jr. wont amount to anything, but i believe he will. just wanted to state that so that when he does succeed I can rub it in the haters faces.

    I agree with both points

As has been said again and again. Chavez Jr did not have an amateur career. His experience is all from his pro fights

And he is only 23. If he wasnt Chavez Jr, he would just be looked at as hot mexican prospect

I do think his name will be cashed in on, but not for awhile. 2009 will be the year his competition gets stepped up, and 2010, when he is 25, will be when he gets his first big title shot, in what will be a huge fight.

He looks to be still growing as well. His body hasnt matured. He has been purported to have problems making 154. He will end up fighting at 160 very soon. Perhaps even 168 in a few years
