In my opinion their are four ways to improve boxing. 1. One champion per weight division. Cut back on all of the belts and titles. 2. Weigh ins should be held the day of the fight. Why have fighters weigh in as Super Middleweights if they are going to fight as Light Heavyweights? 3. Get rid of some of the extra weight division. Their are more than two times the amount of divisions nowadays, as their were originally. No wonder the Middleweight and Light Heavyweight (both original) divisions seem to be so weak, all of the fighters who should be in these divisions are at Super Middleweight. 4. Championship fights should be 15 rounds. I'm not going to try and act like these ideas are original, because they aren't. They are old school, from back when boxing was far more popular than it is today. I want to know what other people think. Would you be for these changes or against them? If you are against them, please explain. If you have any other ideas on changes that could be made to boxing, in order to make it better I would like to hear them as well.
Although it is unlikely to happen cutting back the amount of titles is by far the best solution one per division would make such a huge difference
Nobody will disagree with 1, 3, 4. Everyone says the same thing. But they'll never happen. That's the reality, like it or not. I don't believe 2 will happen either as it's just seen as medically problematic to have "weight drained" guys fighting and the extra time allows the rehydration. Yeah, you cut the weight, it's your own fault, but Atheletic Commisions could be held liable if they "didn't protect the fighter from himself", etc. I know some places enforce max overnight weight gains - that'll become more prevelent before they go back to same day weigh ins.
I agree that it is unlikely to happen, and that is to bad because in my opinion that is one of the things that is killing boxing. Not having a recognizeable, undisputed, liear champion in each division. The closest thing is The Ring Ratings, but in the November 2009 issue there were only six champions in seventeen weight divisions. The way I see it is that this can only hurt boxing. However I have talked so some people who think that having all of the titles and belts is a good thing because it gives people who otherwise might not get a chance to fight for a title, the opportunity.
These are the things that simply need to happen. IMO if the NSAT and the NYSAT recognised only one title, sooner or later everybody else would fall into line.
So Rogers Mtagwa has a chance to finish Juan Manuel Lopez, and because I love boxing. Boring or exciting I love it all and if I can get an extra three rounds in any fight I will take it.
Better quality fight cards Less Divisions (even though I like it the way it is) A fresh promotional image of the sport like what 24/7 is kind of doing More diverse fight locations, I get tired of seeing Las Vegas every title fight. - It cheapens the sport. Boxing is a WORLD sport. Like Mixed Martial Arts
People are hurting themself more in the long run trying lose all of that water weight, and then gaining it back the next day. I am in favor of fighters fighting at a more natural healthy weight that they feel comftorable at. If you look at old school fighters, I think this is one of the reasons that they were able to fight more often and have longer careers. In my opinion trying to gain an advantage by being 10lbs heavier than the division you are fighing in is wrong. I also think that by getting rid of some of the extra divisions it would cut down on people trying to fight at divisions they do not belong in.
I agree with you, what I want to know is how can we as fans put pressure on organizations like NSAT and NYSAT so that they recognise only one title? If anyone has any ideas I would like to hear them.
I agree fight cards could, and should be better. Why not have more than one title fight on a $50-60 PPV. As well as more diverse fight locations. Those are two areas where MMA organizations like the UFC are capitalizing. 24/7 is great for boxing, it creates more of a build up of interest among fans. I thought The Contender was okay, but it just fell short.
Bringing back 15 rounders would be a good idea. IMO the sport would be improved if the top boxers fought more than once or twice a year, even if they fought tuneups against weaker oppostition at least those fights could be put on free TV giving casual fans a chance to see the top guys show their skills thus creating more interest in superfights and the sport in general.
