Whitaker could duck the head shots MAYBE. But Hearns has one of the greatest left hooks to the body of all time.

What do you think he should have done ?.... stopped punching & risk losing a decision if Hurtado recovered ?

**** that, its not Whitakers job to make sure his opponent is safe, its the ref & the opponents corner that has that task, this aint ballet, its a hurt sport.

Whitaker may have been defensively acute, but at 154??!! The man's a Lightweight, for ****'s sake. Hearns is very possibly the most beastly Light Middle of all time, and he'd just walk Pea down with absolutely no fear and with a lopsided height and reach advantage to boot. Hearns stops him pretty much when he wants.

Thomas Hearns would blast out the much much much smaller Pernell Whitaker inside 7 rounds. As great as Sweet Pea was, he was no 154lb fighter, and Hearns would bring a combination of speed, size, and power that no Lightweight in the history of the sport could contend with.

hearns by UD late stoppage, hearns jab woulb be to punishing on whittaker along with his destructive right, sweet pea would have his moments, but hearns would dominate.

I thought Whitaker looked pretty good against Vazquez in his only visit at 154. But to beat Hearns at that weight is such a tall order for him.

Benitez started out as a 140 pound champion with a questionable chin, yet Hearns never bothered to really put it to the test as he did with Cuevas, Duran and Hagler. Pea's ability to take a punch was somewhat more reputable. Tommy tended to slug sluggers and conservatively box boxers. He'd always be able to control Whitaker from long range, so his temperament here would be to accept a comfortable decision win, and not try for the stoppage. He took tremendous pride in his boxing skills and would be perfectly happy with a points verdict against a stylist of Pernell's calibre.

This is just too much to ask of Whitaker. I think this is asking way more of Witaker than was asked of Marquez recently, when he lost to the larger Mayweather.

Another former all time great lightweight attempted to defeat Hearns at this weight. Roberto Duran has better showings at 154 and 160 than Pernell Whitaker, was extremely tough, and had a marvelous defense in his own right. Look what happened when he faced Hearns at 154.

    Hearns would stop Whitaker.

Remember, Hearns actual gameplan involved easing back on the offense and certain parts of the offense in order to give himself the best chance of winning. Benitez was a very unique artist who demanded such a gameplan from Hearns and SRL.
