Somewhere in between. He has the goods to be a really good fighter but his stamina and focus is lacking tremendously. His trainers suck ass too. I feel bad for him cause he is a good guy. I wish him nothing but the best.

 

Always was held in a higher esitmation than he should have been. People talk about his 'prime' against Hopkins, but thats only seen as his prime because he 'won' whereas now he's losing.

In reality he was fortunate to get a few decisions go his way, his nemesis proved to be heavy handed fighters with good stamina. You don't need to be particulary special to beat Taylor, which just proves the point he was never top level himself.

However, he is and was a solid fighter and I respect how many good fighters he's fought.

 

Taylor is ridiculously overrated. His whole career is basically an HBO-created mirage. He fought the usual suspects coming up, got gift decisions against Hopkins and Wright, then fought smaller guys who he struggled with. And as soon as he fought guys at his own weight that were in their prime, he started getting starched.

 

i know this is what you think b/c i've seen you post on taylor before and i respect your opinion,

but how does somebody who is "rediculously overrated" give hopkins that tough of a fight twice in a row...win lose or draw?? does this mean hopkins is rediculously overrated b/c he couldnt beat a guy who is rediculously overrated convincingly enough that the judges couldnt steal it from him??

 

They were close fights, hardly gift decisions. :huh

Along with his Hopkins fights, that's his career. Call me a hater but he was hype not substance.

 

I think underrated to a degree.

He really has given the guys he's lost to hell...Pavlik, Froch, Abraham all had trouble with him and came close to losing their fights with him.

 

Jermain Taylor is not over- or underrated.

He was a fighter who, when still green, gave a prime ATG and undisputed MW champ Bernard Hopkins two very close fights (fights that Hopkins should have won in my book, but that doesn't matter here) - that was a very impressive feat in itself, and Jermain kinda lived of these wins afterwards. He was disappointing in that he was never able to live up to that standard afterwards. But he must be given credit: instead of taking the safe road and holding his belts hostage, resting on his wins over Hopkins, he fought the best competition that was available out there. So what if he couldn't live up to the standards expected from him? At least he tried. I prefer that to someone like Sturm who faces mediocre opposition and keeps on winning (or even losing in Sturms case). Taylor struggled every single time he met a top opponent (including Hopkins), but at the same time he always gave the best performance he could - even in his losing efforts to Pavlik, Froch and ABraham, and in his draw with Winky.

 

Exactly. The bottom line on Taylor is that he never, ever beat ANY top rated fighter at his own weight clearly. That's a mediocre career, at best.

 

You ask me Taylor was cashed out.. he went from fighting C level Jr middle to A levels middles and it created a false illusion that he was ready for these kinds of fights. If anyone remembers Taylor was asked after his fight with Edouard if he was ready for Hopkins ?? Taylor had a very confused and less confident look on his face when he said he did not know. That statement told me everything I needed to know, which in in my opinion Jermain has always suffered in the area of confidence, and that he was not mentally ready for the jump in competition..
