I think you're being needlessly harsh here. Clottey is not a c-level fighter by any stretch of the imagination. He doesn't have great speed, or great power, but he does have good speed and good power and he DOES mix things up. His jab is decent, has a sweet upper-cut, he's a tough, durable fighter with solid skills and a sturdy defence, and he just ran arguabley the best welter in the world very very close.

I'm getting a bit bored of this now, so I'll be brief:

    - Floyd has not dominated all opposition convincingly. That is not true. His two best ever opponents were Castillo and De La Hoya. In three fights, Floyd did not dominate his opponent convincingly once. He lost the first fight with Castillo, and edged a dull second fight with a very unimpressive and unconvincing performance (I scored it 117-113 to Floyd). Against Oscar he did enough to sneak it, but again it was a profoundly unimpressive performance as he did the absolute minimum required to scrape past, there was not even an attempt to emphatically put Oscar to the sword and underline his superiority, just the usual dull pot-shots.

    - Pernell Whitaker is more technical than Floyd. Clearly. He has better technical skills and is more versatile.

You're wrong then. Floyd isn't on a par with Pea. Whitaker was better inside and outside, better in the pocket and better jabbing and moving, a better combination puncher. His resume was better and his ability was better.

I apologize if I was a bit OTT on this thread. As I said numerous times though, from what I've read of your posts you are a damn good poster. Maybe you would benefit from looking into Whitaker's career a little deeper though. I would recommend the Haugen fight and the second McGirt fight as good starting points. If you have any fight recommendations for me drop me a privatemail, I'm always interested in tips from fellow posters. :good

There's nothing much to say other than I disagree. I believe Clottey is mediocre from watching a few of his fights, he couldn't even take advantage of Miguel Cotto having impaired vision, and he wouldn't even make a fight of it against A-level welterweights (Mosley, Mayweather, and Pacquiao if (as I expect) Pac beats Cotto).

Why do you think Toney is overated? And what are you thoughts on MM in general?

No need to apologize, you're probably correct, but I like arguing the toss anyway, if that is the right phrase

I've actually started watching a lot more "classic" era fights, I'm up to speed on Arguello, Chavez, Hearns, Leonard, Duran and Hagler now. Whitaker I do need to see more of. I find it a bit discouraging that Haugen is considered one of his best wins though, from what I've seen of him against Chavez, he didn't seem up to much, despite having heart.

How is barrera overated just because he was beat by jones. Thats like saying mosley is overated because he was beat by forrest or pac is overrated because despite the scoring he was beat by marquez. Every fighter has a boogeyman who they just cant beat. And why is calzaghe in both. Overated is the truth. I agree with you bout floyds resume though as there is a lot of gud fighters on there which he does not get credit for.

Do you think you were being a bit harsh calling him a 'c' class though?

Obviously, he's a limited and moody fighter, and not elite, but he ran Cotto pretty close and does have some solid attributes. I don't think he'd be embarassed by the Berto's of this world.

    Underrated:
    Evander Holyfield - Record 42W 10L 2D 27KO's Won 2WBC 6WBA 4IBF titles 1 Ring Championship Belt in 2 weight divisions,
Wins over Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, James Buster Douglas, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Michael Moorer, Carlos DeLeon, Pinklon Thomas, Michael Dokes, Ray Mercer, Hasim Rahman,

7 of his 10 losses were after the age of 37 was nearly always outweighed against his opponents was past his best (was 37 and had many wars) when he Drew (Gift) and Lossed to Lennox Lewis who was a fresher and naturally much bigger man. Overall one of the greatest fighters of all time who is very underated.

    Pernell Whitaker - Record 40W 4L 1D 17KO's Won 2WBC 2IBF 2WBA 1 Ring Championship Belt in 4 weights divisions,
Wins over Azumah Nelson, James McGirt, Jose Luis Ramirez, Greg Haugen, Roger Mayweather, Freddie Pendleton, Jorge Paez, Julio Cesar Vasquez, Jake Rodriguez,
Supremely talented fighter who barely lossed a round at peak, dominated Jose Luis Ramirez (L) and Julio Cesar Chavez(D) but was robbed of victory, was 35 until he was defeated clearly (against Felix Trinidad) but doesn't get the credit he deserves because he was'nt an exciting fighter should be a lock for anyones Hd 2 Hd top ten fighters of all time.

Its all about perceptions, and in what why you feel fighters are overrated. I said why I felt Barrera was. Also, Mosley is definetly overrated, IMO. Certainly in P4P terms, one swallow doesn't make a summer. And beating Margarito should make you the P4P number 3, especially when you're several places above a guy who recently beat you (cotto).

I'll partial to a little ruckus myself :good

You seem to have chosen six of the best to start with, I bet you have really enjoyed it, especially Duran (personal favourite of mine).

I recommended Haugen not because he is one of the best opponents that Pea faced, he isn't, but because it is a wonderful all-round exhibition of Pea's skills. I feel about that the same way I feel about Pacquiao v David Diaz or Mayweather v Phillip N'Dou or Roy Jones v Vinny Paz - these guys all beat far far better fighters, but these are fights where you can watch and just marvel at their ability and how it sets them apart from the rank and file. McGirt II is a good one for a stellar performance against a top notch opponent, as is Nelson.
