I gotta disagree with machines being good for beginners. With free weights you have to control the weight in 3-d, and obviously have better awareness and control so it's more difficult. However, it's better to learn this in the beginning when you're only handling baby weights and concntrating on lifting technique. Imagine say, using a shoulder press machine, getting up to good poundages, and then switching to free weights. You would have to learn a new technique with lower weights, which would not be ideal, or you would have to use the same weight but learn the technique as you're going along which would be dangerous. I agree with the rest of your post though.

When I was 17 and began weights I started on the smith machine as it was all my gym had. I could do pretty heavy weights. About 70kg no problem. I went to my mates gym, did the olympic bad and immediately I was lika WHAT THE ****. Balancing it was at first was hard and I'd only put 50kg on. I couldn't increase the weight, I had to stick with 50kg solely because of the control issue. The next day my chest was ripped to ****.

Kerry Kayes knowledge of nutrition, fitness is far greater than some of you give credit for, whilst everyone is entitled to their opinion its fair to say that boxing has been slow to adopt techniques which other sports have used for years. Nutrition products are widely used by a variety of sports and sportsmen, times have moved on and our approach to sports, training and fitness has as well. How many boxers simply used to starve themselves to make the weight and basically lost the scales. Whilst many comment about Kerrys link to bodybuilding the forget that he has now worked the corner in hundreds of fights, his advice/ products are now being used by a variety of premership football teams who employ sports scientists who are happy to work with CNP so that must say something. I emailed Kerry about various boxing matters, inturn we were invited up to his gym. He is rightly very proud of everything he has achieved but at the same time most humble and generous with his time, there was no financial incentive to talk about boxing , fitness and about his business but he spent over two hours with us ( thanks to Joe Gallagher also ) . When refering to weights in boxing many mention Frank Bruno as prime example but he is probably more the exception then the rule as Frank has always been addicted to the gym and would constantly train and work out, indeed he still trains daily. Most of the weights programmes Kerry does with the boxers are for short periods of time not pumping iron for hours on end, Im sure if you were friendly enough and had an open mind Kerry would be glad to explain. Whilst we were at Bettabodies various other boxers called in to use the facilities that were not part of Gallaghers camp yet their trainers are happy to seek Kerry's assistance. If Kerrys approach to the sport is wrong why do so many boxers still use CNP products and seek his advice? As previously mentioned Kerry is a nice guy but that alone does not get you working with some of Britains top athletes, you have got to be able to back it up or you will be quickly found out. The other problem with boxing recently is we are quick to write people off as soon as they lose, Sugar Ray Leonard said the same at a sportsmans event recently. Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Ali, Duran all lost fights whilst in their prime. Moore V Rhodes was a great advert for boxing, an exciting fight with plenty of action, no one who attended would of asked for a refund, (dull fights will not attract new supporters and get us back on terrestrial TV), some on here put Moores loss down to weight lifting, yet Moore quite simply said better man won on the night, there was no disgrace in losing and I am sure Moore still has something to offer. Macklin was written off after the Moore loss but you just have to look at the last fight to see that was without any foundation. By the way some talk you would think all boxers who work with Kerry are juiced up and the size of the hulk, but when you see lads like Joe Murray you know that aint the case!! Infact if anything Thaxton looked more muscular and physically bigger than John Murray (another boxer Kerry works closely with )

Kerry Kayes was the man who turned a drinking and pizza-munching fat little manc like Ricky Hatton into a human bulldozer that won the lineal 140lb title. The night he got blitzed by that former bantamweight he could've done with some of that core strength and stamina.

:good Absolutely. Not what I meant ... I was meaning more in terms of if I said to a random person go and use those dumbells to train your trapezius they'd run a mile where machines tend to do exactly what they say on the tin. Good point though.

If that is the case then it's fine as there are times when isolated exercises are useful for the athlete and I'm sure Kerry has his reasons.

Yeah I'm into weight training ...I watched too many Bruce Lee movies!

What sort of weight do super middleweights typically lose to make the 12st limit? And how do you do it?

I think that the involvement of somebody like Kayes in making fighters stronger and doing the weight correctly is so important in our sport...It is the safety of the fighter at all times...:good

What Kayes does not know about body building, nutrtion and strength training is second to none...:yep

I am glad that someone like Kayes is involved with so many of our prospects...:happy
