Calzaghe always had problems with his hands as a lot of boxers do

Anytime a fighter goes into a fight knowing he is not 100% physically it effects him mentally. That isn't even debatable. Calzaghe was really on that night, so Kessler would probably still lose. But if I recall correctly I had it 9-3, and I think Kessler at 100% would perform better than that.

This whole thing is overblown. He may have done, he may not. He did have surgery so that suggests all was not completely well. HOWEVER, the right hands and uppercuts he landed with force didn't suggest he was too hindered, it was probably a minor problem.

Kessler never used this as an excuse himself so we should get past it.

I like Kessler, but the hand excuse irks me a bit. He didn't use it as an excuse straight away, but he did months after the fight.

Imo, a fighter or any sportsman is at their most honest straight after the fight/event, and this was when Kessler conceded that the hand wasn't an excuse.
After his fight with Mundine he said he wouldn't fight injured again, and he didn't even try to postpone the Calzaghe fight.

Also, he was landing that right a lot, so it couldn't have been that bad.

I had it i think either 8-4 or 7-5. I know that the 12th round was clearly Kessler's round.

I think I gave Kessler 1, 2, 4, 5 and 12. He was on his way to winning the 8th, till Calzaghe landed a bitchin body shot and hurt him.

I think Kessler would have used his jab more if he was severely affected by the problem with his right hand...but he rarely used it against Calzaghe.

He was asked straight after the fight if it was true that he had a problem with his hand and he said that it was untrue, there was absolutely no problem with his hand.

Now, that might have just been Mikkel being the gentleman and good sportsman that we know he is, or he might have been being honest, YOU DECIDE!

Whatever the truth though, we know for a fact that Joe fought through that fight with feeble hands, so if we are going to say that Mikkel would have battered him if his hands were fit, we also have to wonder how much better Joe would have fought if his hands were not in China tea cup mode.

Well, that's fair enough but don't forget how suspicious and suspect boxing can be, for example, don't forget Dettiez getting surgery on his hand just so he could legitemately get a re-match after he got battered, though we only found out later that he basically went to hospital to get an ice pack on his knuckles for "slight bruising".

He made sure the press knew he had to go into hospital due to a problem with his hands, which his camp said was troubling him before the fight but it was soon found out that the treatment he had was simply for what any single boxer, amateur or pro would have after putting gloves on someone's face/body.

That said, I think Mikkel is a million times classier than that and I don't think he directly would do such a thing. We never know how far people in his camp or clingers would go though.

What do you think? Check out how he throws his right in the first 20 seconds!
**** me! I certainly wouldn't like to be in the end of that!!

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzFW8bH90UQ[/ame]

That's the last round, so, you can think of it that his hand is knackered so he would be throwing it less towards the end, or he knows he needs a KO, so he is throwing any pain and damage to the wind and biting through the torture as he throws everything in.

EDIT: Sorry, it isn't in the first 20 secs. He does seem to be holding back with his left though.
Anyone remember if it was mentioned by the common (p')tators?

    It was a bit broken.

How do you "take the jab away", mate?

I'm not being facetious. As someone who is hoping to get into boxing (well past my time), I would like to know how one would go about doing that. Keeping close?

Sure he hated every minute, because Hopkins spoilt the fight. Not with any skill, he just turned it into a farce with dirty tricks, cause he knew he had nothing on Joe. All he could do was duck below his belt, but, elbow and generally spoil. I'm not surprised our Joe was frustrated, you're average dickhead in the pub would be frustrated with such a fight!

    Prove that, please.

Not saying you're wrong but I've never heard him mention it himself. I've heard it said by members of his camp but I've never heard the man himself say it.
As I say, I'm not saying you're wrong. I would never be arrogant enough to think I know every word the man ever said on camera but I would like to see the evidence. Thankyou.

    Wowzers!!

No way I can agree with this though!
I'm sure you've been a sportsman in the past, or even currently. I have (on the brink of turning pro before ****ing it off, to concentrate on smoking, drinking cider and taking acid and E's). I'm absolutely certain that an athlete is most delusional directly after the event.
As people are in an argument before having some time to relax and consider their point in a calm atmosphere.

    Bang!!!

**** me! Joe had a chin on him!!

Yeah, he got put on his arse a few times early but he always came back from it. If Kess had connected on most of us forumistas, the stadium would be making a mint with tourists looking for the headless ghost!
