Mexican legend Lupe Pintor, best known for his war with Puerto Rican great Wilfredo Gomez, says WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto should retire if he loses to Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pintor doesn't even think Cotto should be involved in this fight.He felt cotto took such a beating from marg that he should have retired.He says Cotto took too many punches in the fight with Marg. He says he has seen people be stupid and get back in the ring and get damaged even worse and that cotto maybe one of those fighters. You know i have caught alot of **** since I said that Cotto does not look like the same fighter pre-marg....Im not saying this to be biased or even knock Pac....But lets be honest here folks Teddy Atlas has said it,This boxer said it, bert sugar says it in a different tone, emmanuel steward says it in a tone that wont make the fight look like its a blowout...I feel that we have seen the best of cotto already and this is just a smoke screen until march for the mayweather -pacman showcase....i could be wrong but at least I know im not the only buggin:bart
Well, I do think that the Margo beating has affected Cotto, but not to the effect that Pintor believes. Cotto has always indicated that he does not want to fight past 30, so a loss to Pac with the huge payday that comes with it would be a nice way to go out- worst case scenario of course.
The reason they usually say that is because after a beating sometimes a fighter's punch resistance goes way down, making it easy for him to be knocked out in the future; plus mentally they can become scared to exchange. This is what they said happend to Roy Jones when he was knocked out by Johnson right after being knocked out by Tarver. For Cotto, it is still too soon to tell. He's taken pretty good punches since his beating and seemed to handle them well. Also, we can't tell if his fight with Clottey was impacted by his cut, or if there was something mental going on. Before the cut he was doing pretty good though, and fought well for the remainder of the fight considering he had one eye. Also, just losing does not mean he should retire. It depends on the fashion of the fight. If he were to get brutally knocked out, maybe he shoud retire. If its a close fight and he loses on points, maybe Pac was just too fast. None of this will matter though because on saturday Pac is getting KTFO; and all of these so called experts will have to admit they were wrong about Cotto.
Cotto may not be the same, but i think he has enough to beat Pacquiao. Cotto will be able to make needed adjustment in the fight, adjustment that I do not see Pac being able to make. Pac looked great throwing 4-5 punch combos against D. Diaz. But come on Cotto is way above the level of David Diaz. Cotto is not going to charge Pac with his chin up in the air like Hatton. Cotto is going to utilize his right hand to the fullest and use his feet. it's going to be a great and violent dance on Nov. 14th
your wrong imo-i dont think Cotto is as bad since margo as they say. You must also remember Pacquiao has been in many wars and has been koed.
It was in EL Nuevo Dia today ..... He is probably basing it on his personal experience .....of which he would take 6-7 punches to give one. Everyone of Pintor's fights were wars where he looked like Cotto from the Margarita fight. I think Lupe means well....I don't believe Wilfredo Gomez feels the same of which the two have remained friends.
It's on an individual basis. We've seen guys done from less, and guys come back from worse. He got past a very big, tough Clottey with probably somewhat limited vision.
