Approximately one year ago, one of the hot topics of this forum was the induction of David Haye into the heavyweight division. He was supposed to be the coming of the next Evander Holyfield and a man who could have potentially brought new life into a heavyweight era that had been dead for too long.

His first opponent was the faded Monte Barret, a man who was little more than a journeyman during the time of their meeting. Following this less than crowd pleasing showing, Haye was off for a full year doing little in the interim, except basically backing out of fights and running his mouth off. Upon his return last week, Haye faced one of the worst heavyweight titlists in the history of boxing in the 36 year old Nikolay Valuev, who himself was off for a full year.. Haye took a decision in one of the most boring fights I've ever viewed, and frankly looked no more impressive than an ancient Holyfield did in Valuev's last defense.

Now, Haye has signed to fight John Ruiz who will celebrate his 38th birthday in January, has only won 3 of his last 7 bouts over the past 5 years, and hasn't recorded a win over a decent opponent since he beat Rahman back in '03....

The past couple of years have given me plenty of opportunities to say " **** it.... I'm done for as a boxing fan. " With each passing disappointment I have moved closer and closer to that conclusion, but this time, David Haye may very well have given me that last and final shove that I need.....

Awful post. I'd like to draw on a couple of points especially to highlight this.

He stopped Barrett after knocking him down 5 times in an aggressive performance, what the **** was wrong with it for it to be called 'less than crowd-pleasing'?

Ruiz is the mandatory. Do you know what that actually means? Haye has to fight Ruiz or he gets stripped of the title, given Ruiz took step-aside money allowing Haye to fight Valuev as long as he was able to fight the winner by May.

His first opponent was Tomasz Bonin
    but yes your right.

haye was pretty much given the belt...and now that Chagaev is gone, the WBA circle jerk will be Ruiz, Valuev and Haye now.

I agree with a lot of your points, especially that Haye has let down his fans and the sport numerous times since moving up to the HW division, and that he didn't look more impressive against Valuev than 46 year old Evander Holyfield did. Haye is not the champion, but he's a simple beltholder, nothing more, nothing less.

However, him signing to fight Ruiz now is no surprise. Ruiz was the WBA mandatory before Haye got his shot at Valuev, and he stepped aside. It was clear to everyone, including Haye, that he would have to defend his belt against Ruiz. If he won't do that, he'll get stripped and he won't even be a beltholder no more. Anybody who thought that Haye would try to unify the titles against a Klitschko next, has to be very naive.

I know Haye-Ruiz sucks. But in this particular point, Haye can't be blamed - the WBA has to be blamed instead.

Yet another anti-Haye post written by someone who has a problem with Haye's attitude and lets that bias downplay everything else the guy does.

I didn't start this thread with the intention of offending anyone, and if I have, then I sincerely appologize. But, we can't deny that Haye's campaign as a heavyweight has been less than impressive, and John Ruiz being a mandatory is nothing more than a fine example of the kind of corrupt politics that have only worsened as time has gone on. Haye campaigned himself as being the next dominating force of the divsision and even did so, by advertising trash like pictures of him decapitating Wlad's head off.

He get's a chance to fight Vitali and backs out to fight Valuev after all that jibberish....

Why awful? He didn't say anything wrong, did he?

    1. KOing Barret who is everything but hard to KO, VERY exciting...
    2. Running 12 rounds around an immobile monolith Valuev, even MORE exciting...
    3. Fighting the jab&grab valium huggybear Ruiz next is going to be MOST exciting...

I don't really see the excitement in those fights... So what if he must fight Ruiz - it will be as boring as it comes, David Haye or not...

    Had Haye

    1. fought a decent, dangerous, prime opponent instead of Barret and KOd him in 5 or even 10

    2. fought Valuev with heart and determination instead of just runnig circles around him (hey, ancient Holyfield did it already...) and at least knocked him down once, if not KOin him

    3. get rid of this lackluster boring plague Ruiz in as devastating a manner as Tua did

I'd be the first to hail the new exciting ruler of the HW division, but what I have seen so far was boring, boring, boring... And something tells me Haye-Ruis fight will be the same - boring, boring, boring...

If THIS is THE EXCITEMENT the heavyweight division was waiting for, then I'll change for the live coverage of the chess tournaments gladly :tired

Actually there's more to being a champion than holding a strap around your waste, and at this day and age, it particularly holds true when the letters on that strap say W - B - A....

The heavyweight division's future is about great large sized athletes.

But, there are none in professional boxing.

The division is and has been so poor that ex-middleweights and cruisers have been able to add a few pounds and compete. And, old past greats and even mediocre fighters have been able to hang around much longer than anyone could expect or want.

All of this is related to the immense popularity of other sports and the educational subsidy provided in the university/college system which has stripped away the greatest large sized athletes from pursuing professional boxing as a form of competition and/or career.

So, the division consists of decent small guys, old men, "C" level athletes, and pedestrian so-called champions.

You'll just have to be patient until the cycle turns or at least 'til a few young great large sized athletes decide to wander (back) into the pursuit of boxing at which time this dreck/**** will be cleaned away and exposed for its mediocrity - top to bottom.

This is undeniably the worst era relative to the pure talent level which exists on the planet.

No one has watched or been interested in boxing for many years now. The US is the entertainment capital. It lauds great athletic performance - no matter where it originates. The lack of interest in boxing is a product of there being few great athletes in the sport (none in the heavier weight classes) as everyone here can recognize the dismal talent participating in the sport and the performance of the heavyweights, in particular, is laughed at for its absurd level of mediocrity.

Nothing is going on in heavyweight boxing. Just move along, just move along - for now.
