Its all leverage, we see this all the time. A fighter has to show that he has other options in order to gain the upper hand in negotiations. Of course Mayweather is going to fight the winner, but he has to show he has options.

This happens before any big bout.

Before Hatton, Pac was talking about fighting Valero.
Before Jones, Hopkins was talking about fighting Johnson or Dawson.
Before DLH, Mayweather was talking about fighting Mosley.

You have to show you have other options or you get screwed.

Why do you think Mosley gets screwed? Because everyone knows the guy has no other options. He begs for fights and everyone knows he's desperate.

 

Can you imagine a fight between PBF and Margarito. It would be a UD for Floyd. Margarito would probably throw 800 punches and land six the entire fight.

 

Floyd would stop Cotto. After Floyd cut Cotto's eye, he would hammer it all day until Cotto's corner throws in the towel.

It's good Floyd is exploring options because he'll need them should certain matchups fall through and he wants activity. However, if he takes easier options in lieu of a worthy challenge that is available and not being ridiculous about money offered(in other words don't overprice himself and be realistic about how much money can be brought to the table) then he needs to be called on it. It's ok if he takes a tune up stay busy bought that leads to him facing someone with a remote chance of beating him(Mosley, Williams, Cotto, or Pac) Quintana, Collazo, Berto(if Mosley doesn't wreck him first), Cintron, hell even Hlatshwao(however his name is spelled) or Jesus Soto-Karass just for laughs (or JCC jr anyone?)

Your comments here are interesting, and I do agree that Floyd makes most, if not all, is decisions around money (though there was Margarito awhile back). The thing about calling him on it is that he is not the only one doing it. I mean, for instance, were there not deals sifting between Pacquaio and De La Hoya for quite some time before an agreement was met on the money split: unfortunately, it is simply part of the sport today.

As for Floyd matchups, Quintana, Collazo, Cintron, Hlatshwayo, at least to me, seem a bit overmatched (especially the latter two). Should Berto beat Mosley, I pray that a money deal be made between him and Mayweather - - though after the dispute between Berto and Mosley regarding this, I doubt it. Should Mosley beat Berto, a circumstance that I'm sure will be spectacular to watch, I believe that Mayweather will come off his horse for the matchup, as, in such a case, the money will probably be right. I only pray that Berto doesn't run and/or Mosley catches him with a looping right to send him into fairyland (hopefully rounds 8 or 9, just for kicks).

But, honestly, I think Mayweather will take on the winner of Saturday's fight, as it will be a safer bet on his part - - he'll know what he's getting into and the money will be there. I seriously doubt Williams (but perhaps it'll happen, as Mayweather then would be a 7 class belt holder).

Also, just for consideration, though Arum would NEVER let it happen, Mayweather could take on Pavlik . . . (perhaps he could even work out a 70/30 split should Pavlik look crappy again on the 19th).

Quintana, Hlatshwayo, Cintron and Collazo(and like I said we can even throw in Jesus Soto-Karass and JCC Jr. ) were mentioned for nothing more than tuneups to stay primed for a much bigger fight. He could have fun in these fight emasculating them and try some things ahead of a matchup involving someone who poses a major threat to him.

As for Pavlik, a friend of mine made an interesting point on him. We all know he bowed out of the Dec 5th fight with PW. My friend said that if he shows up not in the best shape for his new fight on the 19th, then it was true that his infection hindered his training. If he shows up ripped and ready then something would be very fishy about just why he chose not to fight PW.

Good point that partially revived the lost respect I have for Kelly. Still, should he show up drained or not, I think he'll win - - and should he win, what happens next? The middleweight division is empty. Personally, I think he should take on Allan Green at super-middleweight. Perhaps, he could fight Angulo, but, when I think through the fight, it would be boring. Bute/Andrade would be interesting (specifically Andrade) or even another Miranda fight (but from Kelly's perspective, that seems to be risky without reward).

I assume that Kelly's waiting to rematch Hopkins - - but how he'll manage to arrange that fight . . . ? But if he keeps fighting small time fighters, looking unimpressive, despite the supposed reason, he's just going to pull out of the spotlight slowly, ending up fighting James Kirkland upon his release, losing via a devastating knockout.
