Troy Rowland did a great job against Chavez Jr.

A hand picked opponent (from Cedar Spings, MI - 20 min for GR) who was coming off a long lay off, not much power, and has been stopped before ... gave it his all against a hyped up fighter in JC jr.

The HBO analyst riped Jr up and said that he was hyped and that he fought all tomato cans ... I think they were a bit harsh ... the also knocked him from not having an amateur experience.

I think that Chavez is still a work in progress and probably shouldn't try to contend for a title in a couple of years. He's only 23 and still needs to get better and work on things ... he should also look to step up in class against someone like Cintron or something ...

Thoughts on the GR native ... and Chavez jr

Maybe TopRank would put Chavez jr in with Foreman?

Chavez jr landed some flush shots and Rowland hung in there like a champ. he took those hooks to the body well, I thought that would slow him down but it didn't. Nonetheless, Chavez jr. has a lot of work to do before he fights for a world title. He looks the same to me as he did 20 fights ago, he has a lot of room for improvement.

Yeah I agree, he showed improvements from his 10 to his 20th fight but since he hasn't really been showing anything new. He's becoming a good boxer, but he does need to step up in class to get better.

    Good stuff, I agree..
Tho Chavez will need to heal his ******* after getting raped by the HBO announced team. (Lampley w/o vasaline)

Jr. is a work in progress, But at middleweight he defo is a failed project, IMO.
154lbs sounds alot better, That said kid has the spirit.
(But his last name is Chavez so he is ****ed...)

I wonder if they can melt dude down to 147lbs?
(He never looks is peak condition)

Rowland did his job, Made Jr. sweat & gave Manny & Cotto time to warm up. BUt he was defo beat down by Jr.s body work. (Tuff dude)

Chavez Jr is a sick joke.
How the **** can you have that many fights and still be fighting journeymen?

Fair play to Rowland though, he kept on going.

I honestly thought he did a bit better than the scores showed. He was never domianted altough Chavez was landing some clean punches on him midway through.

He had a good start IMO.

Why? that was the best part of the fight. It was completely boring, and a disgrace.

I thought Jr started out at 140 lbs ... I think he can make 147 but there's too much risk there ...

I don't think Rowland is a journeyman, he was well on his way before he retired a few years ago ... he was a local product but he's won a regional title and was on his way to a major world title shot.

Emmanuel Steward was on a role last night ... he said the foreman/santos fight was boring and that they should keep talking about George Foreman ... and they all ganged up on Jr ...

Jr actually started out at 130.

No way he can make 147 anymore but 154 should be his weight. His body did not look good at 160.

This is basically his amateur career ... he needs a new trainer ...

Rowland looks decent. Why wasnt he serious about the sport and get some quality training?

Chavez is goddamn BUM. He had a d-level fighter in there who didn't have enough power to hurt a gnat and he couldn't mount a convincing offense against him. Of course he's fought nothing but tomato cans -- how the hell could he possibly have the 40-0 record he has otherwise?
That was one of the worst undercard matches I have ever watched in my life. Disgraceful.

I live in Grand Rapids Mi and have seen troy fight about 6-8 times, I also worked with his uncle who told me he retired because his wife/girlfriend was pregnant. He was A 2 or 3 time state golden gloves champ. He is a pretty good fighter who is allways in shape and ready to fight, I think his lack of power is his downfall. There was an interview in our local paper last week where Troy said he is sticking with Dave Packer? the same trainer he has had since he first started fighting.

It's been said. He hasn't shown any improvement for ages. He's reached his limit.
