Thought on last night's fight.

Congratulations to Manny Pacquiao, he once again proves many of us wrong, including myself, by beating one of the best Welterweights in the world, and he did it going toe to toe.

I'd like to give a little bit of credit to Miguel Cotto, however. I felt he was more competitive early on, and with the exception of the two knockdowns, one of them being more of a balance issue, he was holding his own and landing hard shots on Pacquiao. He didn't quit, he kept getting up off his stool late on, when it had became apparent there was only going to be one winner. He did have a lot of trouble with Manny's speed, and it was the shot he didn't see that hurt him badly. The left uppercut, he was saved by the bell.

This fight was one and lost the moment Pacquiao took Cotto's best shots. I didn't think that was ever going to happen. I imagined Pacquiao being able to land hus own shots with his quickness and variety, and I actually thought he had a good chance at hurting Cotto after the Hatton fight. I picked Cotto, however, because we had yet to see Manny take a shot from a full bloodied Welterweight, and it was hard for to believe a former Featherweight could take Cotto's left hand. He did, on numerous occasions, but he'd then come back and land more shots than Cotto, which would hurt his opponent.

Well done to Manny. Great performance. Well done to Cotto, both of them gave us a real memorable war the first 3-4 rounds, but then it was Pacquiao's punch resistance and own speed and power that saw him come through the fight pretty comfortably in the end.

There's only two fighters from 147 and below in the world today that could beat Pacquiao, who I'd pick to beat him, everyone else need not apply.

 

I guess you don't following Boxing outside of Manny, so I'll have to tell you, but Barrera is retired. Yeah, he actually turned professional 20 years ago this year, and had a long prosperous career before anyone had even heard of Manny.

I've always maintained that Floyd Mayweather Jr is a bad style match-up for Manny. Really, how many of those flurries do you envision landing on the end of Floyd's chin? He very rarely gets hit, and he's avoided dynamic offensive fighters in the past. I think Floyd would win the fight comfortably.

Shane Mosley also. He brings way to much of everything, including comparable handspeed to Manny Pacquiao.

Those are the only two. If you don't like it, tough ****.

 

I kind of just told you. The fact Manny was stopped down at the lower weights before he matured, and how Marquez was able to hurt him with his left hand on the counter more recently. He hadn't gave any of us any indication that we was capable of taking full bloodied shots from a strong, skilled Welterweight like Miguel Cotto. Think about it, people are making this fight out to be thoroughly one sided, but in the first 5-6 rounds, Cotto was landing hard, hard shots too, but Manny was taking them. If his chin wasn't as sturdy, he'd have hit the canvas,.

Paul Williams ain't no Welterweight anymore, he's way to big for Manny just like Kelly Pavlik is way to big for Manny.

I don't want this thread to concentrate on questioning who Manny would lose too. This was his night, and once again, his year. He did a fantastic job, and like I said myself, proved me wrong...again.

 

Those who picked Pacquiao don't know any more about the sport than the rest of us. Pacquiao wasn't supposed to walk through Cotto's best shots, he's just a special fighter, and that's all it boils down too. It's a credit to him that he proves us all wrong, god forbid if Manny kept taking on fights he was expected to win. Ignore the odds for Hatton and Cotto, those were legitimate threats. And Pacquiao...dispelled logic.
