**** it........ Benitez' peak at 147 to 154 was short-lived from 1979 to 1982.............. After Benitez schooled a sluggish Duran in early 1982, Benitez went to hell against Hearns, and later to Hamsho in '83.......... Benitez was never really a major player ever again after 1983.........

KO losses to "Moore and Hilton" nailed the coffin shut on his career........

from 140-154 pounds benitez had two losses. To Leonard and Hearns. He lost his welt. title to Leonard and his superwelt to Hearns. He was great. Underrated. Problem is he could not handle moving up to 160.. It was too much. He fought Cervantes,Palomino, Leonard,Duran and Hearns. Not a major player? Benitez schooled Duran bigtime. Duran was outclassed.

He knew how good Hearns was. That is an excuse like the Benitez fight and the Leonard rematch. Duran looked good to me. Duran knew what Hearns had and Duran was knocked cold. No one ever did that to him up to that point and since, and the excuses are always there. That would nice to have excuses for all of our favorite fighters so the losses are discounted. Then anyone can be ATG top 5. Duran's excuse of eating 2 steaks before Leonard was a classic. His excuses were predictable. He just couldn't deal with speed. It is a good thing Pernell Whitaker was not at lightweight when Duran was, because Duran's problem with speed would have shown big time. He didn't have that caliber when he was at lightweight.

Yes. Boxing came so easily that he saw no reason for pesky things like training. Benitez is the college student that never studied who graduates summa cum laude.

You know put it this way, Had PAC lost to Hatton, Cotto, Mosley and Floyd...he wouldnt even get a sniff at top 100 ATG even coming from Fly and already beating three mexican legends at SFW

Im with you on this one. Im trying with Duran but I cant rationalize it

Duran gets consideration other fighters do not. If he looks bad or losses he says he did not train. Hatton should have tried that or Cotto. Totally ridiculous that people buy it. Fact is he beat really one Hall of Fame fighter in his career, and if Barkley gets in then two, but ATG he beat only one Ray. Tommy and Wilfred and Marvin and Ray all beat him.

But you get to see the work Hatton and Cotto put into training..HBO show us how...They fight 2-3 times a year so there is no reason for them not to be in top shape...just like the massive amounts of anecdotal and first hand evidence that say Duran just was an arrogant and lazy SOB after he made his money..He truly believed he didnt need to train to win and the results speak for themselves.

You guys dont truly believe that the man who lost to Kirlkand Laing and Robbie Simms is the same guys who fought Hagler or Leonard? Or I guess maybe you do.

Does he deserve a free pass? Hell ****en no...But anything he did after Leonard, several years and 20 pounds past his best weight cant be taken as him at his best...Thats like giving Pac **** for his early losses or Ali for his later ones. Double standards as usual with some of you people.
