I think after that fight against Mosley which he fought great; I think he fell in love with his boxing.

I had no problem him fighting of the back foot against Mosley. I thought he did a good job at doing it.

However, since that fight when he gets his opponent on the ropes he tags them a couple of times and retreats for no reason or he gets one good punch in and retreats admires his work and then those much of nothing.

He seems to have abandoned his body work and got lazy with his very effective jab sort of like DLH did.

He became a defensive fighter and let many of his offensive tools which made him such a great fighter diminish.

His defensive mentality has caused him to back up against come forward fighters like Margarito and Pac which is absolutely the wrong thing to do against those fighters.

Cotto could have clinched and circled and unloaded much like Mosley did against Margo instead he threw his punches and he retreated.

Against Pac he totally abandoned his jab which should have been instrumental in disrrupting Pac's momentum.

Whether the outcome would of been the same I think the bouts would have been more competitive and possibly different. Some of you will say that no matter what he did against either fighter the outcome would be the same but we will never know.

    Thoughts.

Cotto did very well against Manny if anything he got too agressive. I had Cotto winning the 3rd and 4th round if not for the knockdowns. The second knockdown was brutal and took a lot out of Cotto. If Cotto hadn't been so agressive and hadn't got caught by the second knockdown he could have won that fight.

i didnt have a dog in this race since i really like both guys. but i will tell you there were points in the fight where cotto snapped pac's head back w/ a jab and i found myself screaming at the tv for cotto to move in and cut the ring off or follow it up w/ something and he just sort of stood there and didnt build off it. he landed some beautiful jabs in the fight but never followed up w/ anything.

I think he needed to box with an effective jab to win the fight. He got careless, and got caught. New trainer for sure, you can see it in his last couple fights following the exit of Evangelista. Manny steward!

He didnt look good vs Mosley at all.

Cotto fights in these odd spurts. His ring generalship is ineffective as he throws a few punches retreats waits for his opponent and then throws some more leather.
Its a completely ineffective way of fighting. That said as his competition has gone up naturally he has had to modify his style. I dont think in a month of sundays he'll ever beat a stud like Pac as he simply couldnt deal with the speed or angles. No amount of a jab would have made a difference. As for Shane he got a gift. And in both fights despite Margo's cheating he was walked down. Cotto cant deal with pressure from big punching welters. Simple.

I think that everyone has a point here... what was absolutely vital against Pac was that he needed to get off first with the jab keeping him pinned back. Because once Pac was throwing his combination he couldnt do anything!

I still dont understand why he 'resets' after he throws a combination and his refusal to clinch is ****ing frustrating... but he is still a v good fighter who needs a trainer who is the boss in camp and can sort out his flaws. If he used his jab to set up everything and thre combos off of it, as well as employing head movement and feints then he can rise back to the top without doubt.

The question is does he have enough left to do so?

Cotto is able to display his ferocity and brutal offense only against the likes of Gomez, Jennings, or a mentally fragile Judah.

When he's in there with an elite, hard-hitting, and, the key word, relentless opponent with heart like Pac, Margo, and, to some extent, Mosely, his ferocity seems to fade. In the Mosely fight, he fought nice but I felt he fought on the back foot mostly to protect the razor thin points lead he had and because he was respectful of Mosely's power and was looking to avoid exchanging with him.

I'm not saying it was not the smart the thing to do and he looked very good doing it and showed skill. I'm just saying why I think he fought that way against Mosely.

    No he started fighting guys:
    Mosley
    Margo
    Clottey
    Pac

Who he could not bully. It had nothing to do with him changing as a fighter, he simply COULD NOT beat these guys the way he beat Judah, Malignaggi, Quintana, etc

I guaruntee if Mosley fought him today he would knock him out. I think he gave Cotto's power and durability too much respect going into that fight.
