Why is it that these days if an elite fighter gets handed his first, or second defeat all of a sudden they are ridiculed and branded as a hype job, washed up and then come the calls that they should retire. Great fighters of older era's may have had several losses on their record sometimes against lesser foes for one reason or another but they are still held in high esteem and rightly so. Same thing goes in other combat sports.. MMA, kickboxing, muay thai - some of the most elite fighters may have over 10 losses on their record but it doesn't detract from their greatness.. for the good of the sport the farce that is the "undefeated" title needs to be forgotten, no one is unbeatable and most fighters who have never had a professional loss can attribute that to carefully padding their records and avoiding the best/dangerous competition. Boxing fans need to grow up a bit.

I hope a lot of it is done in fun and jest. Also, it is nice to have a jab at people who pick the fights so incorrectly. I also like to have a little fun and do a little ribbing after a big fight.

But, I also did a Congratulation thread to kessler in which i was totally serious. It takes a lot of balls to get into the squared ring and fight against top guys, hell it takes balls to spar and fight in a local gym.

Boxing is a great sport and for some reason these hate threads seem to gather all the support on ESB. People enjoy that on the internet mroe than a congratulatory thread. I think it is just the nature of people.

Agreed, its a huge problem in the sport. Fighters get protected for too long, years and years until they have around 25-30 fights at least because of the fear of them losing that 0.

Thanks for starting this thread. It is one of the most irritating things about message boards. The few fight fans I know on a personal level don't discount fighters due to a loss. Unless it truly is an exposure, which truly are few and far between.

These "fans" are the reason certain fighters would rather protect their 0 than test themselves against the best.

If you're talking about kessler then I'd just like to say that he was never 'elite'.. good, but not top p4p material.. anyway, I do agree that these ridiculous fans are very quick to dump on a man who was held in such high regard only as early as yesterday. Opportunistic ****s! To me it looks like Kessler is suffering from inactivity and injuries and he's not quite the same fighter as before, but he was by no means overrated based on what we've seen from him in previous outings. He was at one point a very good fighter. Don't know if he is anymore.

People liek to say "I told you so". So they come out of the woodwork. Also, we are a society of sensationalism. Everything is exaggerated.

Its a ****in joke what some fans say nowadays. Ali lost, both of the Sugar Rays lost, Hagler, Hearns, Duran, Dempsey all these fighters lost and so did many great others. A loss is a ****in loss. You will lose if you fight against the best regularly, thats just life.

because this is not mma its shady boxing, fighters either win or its out, plus in mma its easier to excuse a bad loss where in your boxing your done because of how regulary they get in the ring, or have rematches if you dont show some effort.

It is ****ing irritating when people disrespect a fighter whenever that fighter gets beat.

However, the growing trend for protecting a fighters 0 doesn't help.

Back in the day all fighters, even the best ones would get beat because they would fight the best (often fighting the same fighter multiple times) and more importantly they would fight boxers with many different styles so they would sometimes get beat by someone who was seen as a lesser fighter but was just stylistically wrong for them. However these fighters wouldn't be insulted for getting beat. It was just looked at as the better man won on the day. Nothing wrong with that.

I have seen a few people here saying Kessler was exposed. Thats bull****. Was Kessler exposed as a bit one dimensional when he is facing a slick, quick, intelligent fighter? Yes. Was he expossed as an overhyped **** fighter? No ****ing way.

Great Point. Best examples right now are Cotto and Kessler. They lose 1 or 2 fights and they are branded as overrated. Its because boxing fans of today like living in this fantasy world of heroes where the hero ALWAYS wins against any opponent. They incorporate that unrealistic idea into boxing and stop being impressed whenever someone loses.

One thing they should understand is that at the end of the day, these boxers are just human beings. Anybody can lose to anybody at any given night. What we should look at is the way they bounce back after those defeats. We should also look more closely at their wins rather than their losses.
