I don't see a lot of good Pinoy boxers O.O. I know a few champs, but not to take any credit away but.... anyone can get a belt nowadays
Pacquiao did Philipino/asian fighters a favore. Chris John is an amazing talent too. Is he considered Philipino? He is Malay right?
Dude. If you are a champ you are a good fighter. I mean Viloria koed Solis who in my opinion was an extraordinary fighter. Mayol gave Calderon everything and gave him a fight, Donaire is in the # for # list. Did you see how old sonsona is and his experience, beating a seasoned champ like lopez and being the first ever to kd him. Penalosa, regardless, is a great warrior in my book. If you don't consider these fighters good, something wrong wit you. Kill the hate and appreciate.
CALM DOWN!!!!!!!!! before 3 years ago i didnt even know flips boxed. so now theres one elite fighter and less average pinoy fighters than fingers on my hands.. mark my words, no country except the u.s will ever come close to running boxing like mexico.. u.s is #1 in boxing but mexico is a close second... no other country has enough boxers to debate they are a great boxing country except maybe p.r, and cuba..
Chris John is Indonesian, it would be cool to think that Pac has raised awareness for Asian fighters in general, but it's too early to tell honestly...
Yep. It is just hard as hell for them to get to the States to fight. They seem to have a nice range of styles coming out of the Phillipines too. CUBA needs a state sponsored pro-program!
Sonsona - This content is protected Nietes - champ Donaire - This content is protected champ Penalosa - I think he beats Montiel or anyone in his proper weight class Nietes - champ This content is protected Pacquiao - #for# number 1 ATG Mayol - New champ Villoria - champ This content is protected Last I checked that is more than 1
It is harder for Pinoy boxers to get exposure in the lucrative US market. Lots of things. Boxing is not a lucrative sport in the Philippines, so there are not many facilities and fights to develop talent. The raw talent is there. There has always been a little bit of success in the Olympics and moreso in the Asian and SouthEastAsian games for the Philippines in boxing. However it is too expensive for them to stay in the US to try to get exposure. South Americans can take a bus. Pinoys have to fly over. Now that PacMan has exposure there is more interest in Pinoy fighters overall. Better purses because of the added attention, looking for the next PacMan. These other fighters are good the opportunities are just better because they can ride the slipstream of the PacMan's success. Will the opportunities stay once the PacMan retires? That will be up to these up and comers to carry the torch and the attention.
Asian boxing's pretty good since way back. But mostly, they fight each other, here in the asia-pacific rim (Japan, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, etc.) instead of flying halfway around the world and fight in North america. They can complete a full and great career without leaving asia. They got plenty of competition here. Fighting in the US just gave asian boxers better worldwide exposure, but they've always been producing very good fighters.
i agree that this might be a very good era of boxing here in the philippines but i don't think that we have reached the "status" of mexico as a boxing country powerhouse yet. i know that we already have it good way back but we never had this much boxers that get some global attention.
:good i do think that their stable (ALA) is just pitting these kids with the wolves at a very early age which is wrong. They should be harnessing their skills at this stage.
