I think the best version of Starling could pull out a close one against Oscar. I think Starling is often underrated.
I agree...I dont see a fighter like Starling getting his dues against a guy like Oscar. Given Hoya's ability in the past to be able to steal rounds with ineffective flurries. Starling would give Oscar all types of hell..but Im not sure he would beat him convincingly enough to overcome the scoring handicap that he has against him before he he steps in the ring. This is not a total knock of Oscar though...He is a fighter who is classy, mobile and skilled enough not to allow Marlon to dominate him..he would be more then competitive all the way.
If Starling doesn't go all foolish, he could use his considerable skills to pull off an upset decision in 12, if 15 he's winning.
Yes i agree he was eratic:yep remember he was decisioned buy Villela, But even at his best Oscar could just do a lot more Offensively, although Starling had great defense , I just dont see Starling doing enough to beat Oscar. This would be a difficult fight for Oscar but no way he loses Oscar by ud12 115-113 and thats against a Marlon Starling at 100%.
Yeah, kind of how I see it. Oscar gets the judges vote here, but answering who actually won would be much harder to do. Starling might edge it for me. Both fighters could go missing in action at times (Oscar through gassing, Mooch through being Mooch) and it may come down to who has the shorter lapse.
Back in the days i always said Starling was underrated, but right here I think the posts are getting to nostaligic here. Oscar was an A to A* fighter and Starling was an A- guy. Oscar was at least a step above Marlon.
I cant see how saying Starling gives Oscar the fits is being nostalgic. Oscar has a hard time with defensive specialist throughout his career. Starling arguably beat Curry, defeated Breland, Brown and Honeyghan..and stepped up to give Michael Nunn all he could handle. As sweet_scientist said he could go missing in action sometimes, which did on occasion manifest itself in lacklustre performances and even unexpected losses. But at his best he was fine fighter, who would have pretty much cleaned up against any welter of the last 5 years and would have been at the very least a top contender in any era...Stylistically he is giving Oscar hell and I dont think there is such a ability gap between them at the weight that its impossible to entertain Hoya dropping a decision in this one.
Good stuff Rock. Nunn, as usual, could have made things easier on himself but Starling gave him a good fight nonetheless. I can't think of any welter of recent times, with the possible exception of Mayweather, beating Marlon at his best. In a fair world with straight judges, he'd outpoint Oscar IMO. Too savvy behind the guard and too good on the inside.
If you checked my post out i stated that it would be a close decision for Oscar so i do agree that he would give Oscar fits I just dont see him winning this one. First fight with Curry was very close. 2nd fight I thought Curry clearly won. As for Breland well big deal! Breland to me was never that special as a Pro I think guys like Collazo would give him all he wanted. Simon Brown was pretty good but could be outboxed and Starling barely beat him. The Honeyghan win was a very impressive win,but bottom line none of those guys except for Curry was on Oscars level. Can you imagine Oscar losing to Villela? As for the Michael Nunn fight well I have to admit i snoozed on that one BOOOOOOOring, but from what I remember Nunn could have beaten him easier. Dont get me wrong I think Starling was a helluva fighter with a tight defense and good chin(save the Cheap shot from Molinares),but Oscar gets this by a close but convincing decision 115-113
:good Marlon Starling is often so underrated it's almost criminal!! He could be (Very) erratic, but, on his best form, he'd make them all go!! But I do believe that De La Hoya nicks this one after a compelling and very close fight. If it was over 15 (Not 12) then those 3 extra rounds would probably tilt things in Marlon's favour (But De La Hoya would make sure it was over 12!). Great question though!!!
Moochie would find some way to blow this one. I often wonder how differently his career might have unfolded if not for the Charlie Newell tragedy. With his abilities, he should have wound up in Canastota.
