oh he definitly changed his personality against the not so great but when he was agaisnt a challenge he wasnt gonna be denied. against thornton for example he won 7 rounds clear then just seemed to say **** it for the last few rounds. his disputed decisions are just becuase he allowed the guy to win the rounds that he was well ahead on.

an example of his passive style to his more agressive former self is against benn in the rematch. when benn started to counter the counterpuncher eubank chased him with serious intent.

I have it the other way round.

Benn looked more impressive at 168, had less controversial wins, and I thought he beat Eubank in the fight called a "draw".
His win over McClellan was amazing.

Cheers for that fight, never seen that before, they mentioned that is was 1 of Eubank`s best performances in his next fight (ironically his 1st ever defeat to Steve Collins) & Id been wanting to see it ever since.

I liked his jab & the way he unleashed those combos at times, Wharton is 1 tough guy but the skill gap was too much to overcome.

Im one of Benn's biggest fans but I've got to go with Calzaghe. I'd love to be a hardcore Calzaghe fan but his record leaves too much to be desired, similar to Eubank. Benn, Eubank, Watson and Calzaghe were all pretty different in style and personality which makes the rivalry between them so interesting. Im gonna take a leap and say if Watson hadnt been injured he'd have become best of the four.

Watson got his brain bashed in by Eubank in his only fight at super-middle.

he was winnign the fight handily though and showed some amazing skills

also the words 'brain bashed' for me are in quite bad taste

Mike was making Eubank look like a twat prior to that bat-out-of-hell shot landing. He was as strong as he'd ever been and was coming into his own by this time. You can bet that had he seen that fight through, he would've been a considerable force to be reckoned with through the following years.

Jones beat Toney who was probably no 1 at Super-Middle at that time period, would anyone before or in Super-Middleweight history (1988- ) beat that version of Jones?

Benn would have a chance...and McCllenan.

He lost the fight, his only title fight at super-middle.
Eubank was the better fighter on the night.

    His brain was bashed in.
Bashed, (pummelled, hammered or simply punched if you prefer) by another man's fists hard enough so that a blood vessel was torn and cause massive bleeding, resulting in massive blod clot, that eventually needed 6 surgeries and left him in a vegitative condition.
    That's the reality.

You're happy to laud the his fine boxing skills that night, so try not to get offended by (what I think is) a fair shorthand description of the end result. I think that's a little hypocritical, or at least shying away from the brutal reality.

So what ? Watson lost the fight. And lost it very conclusively and very very badly.
That bat-out-of-hell shot did land and was not only the story of the fight, but far more than that too, unfortunately.

....... but in the real world, what actually happened was about as far from that scenario as you could possible imagine.

At middleweight, I rate Watson above Eubank and Benn.

But his one fight at super-middleweight (a LOSS) was epic and tragic, and while he put up and absolutely magnifcent effort, rating him off of that would be a bit wrong, IMO.

It wasnt the punch though was it? The damage was caused by his head hitting the bottom rope. I certainly wouldnt say Watson should be rated higher than Calzaghe, Benn and Eubank at super-middle as they clearly achieved more but without this terrible stroke of fate he would have been the best, I think we should be allowed to speculate.
