2009 has been filled with great fights. We as boxing fans have witnessed a great year of boxing. Sure, there have been big name fights that have given us our moneys worth but also there were there share of no name fights that have put us to the edge of our seats with excitements as well! Lets have the opportunity now to name those fights that we think should rank as top 2009 fight of the year candidates!

For me, I would think the following fights have to be near the top:

    Paul Williams vs. Sergio Martinez
Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz

Any others you want to add to the list?

Martinez v Williams is FOTY. It had the correct ebbs and flows.

Pac v Cotto sucked, didn't live up to the hype, and was a one-sided beatdown after just a few rounds.

Diaz v Marquez was good, but I enjoyed this fight more.

Yeah - incredibly amazing!!! At first I thought it would be a technical match, but after the first round I realized that it was going to be a slug fest and from the right hook connected by Sergio, Williams was a sitting duck! The fight was really a back to back slug fest by two guys who were william to take a punch in order to give one back. Classic!

Abraham vs. Taylor was good, but I think it was a little too predictable that Taylor was going to gas out. Acknowledging this, the knock out by Abraham gave no surprise of what was to come. Paquiao vs. Cotto could have been good but from what I hear it was too one sided to be considered a top candidate for fight of the year.

I have to agree with you. In regards to Diaz vs. Marquez, it should be closely behind Williams vs. Martinez.

I think what made this fight better is I think the majority thought it'd be a dud. I wasn't expecting excitement, dual KD's, and brutal exchanges.

It had that arc that great fights have, Martinez early, Williams in the middle, then both battling down the stretch trading rounds. That makes a FOTY.
