Were you the one swooning over the Schmeling/Walker fight while drunk on here a year ago or so? :p

    "great/greatness/greatest
    adjective

distinguished; famous: example a great inventor"

I have done a little research on Walker now, it does seem he was a pretty good fighter. I probably agree he is an just about ATG on achievments.

Not to disrespect him or anything but Sugar Ray is the greater fighter by default, due to his fame, whereas Walker is a bit unknown these days.

Sugar Ray gave himself a bit of an advantage here though to by fair. He chaged his name from Walker Smith to Sugar Ray. Sugar Ray is far easier to remember which makes him more famous 50 years on.

    Reasons for picking Leonard?

This is really split right down the middle on who was greater. Some have said Walker by a bit and then some have said Leonard.:think

BIG DEE HERE= Are you kidding me Walker Smith was Sugar Ray Robinson not Leonard what the hell are you talking about. Fame has nothing absolutely nothing to do with how great a fighter you are. Walker would have walked right through Ray Leonard at any weight class by taking his best shots and coming on to beat his body to death. Leonard wasn`t strong enough to keep Walker off of him. Walker beat the best Lt Heavyweights and Heavyweights of the time. Leonard beat no one but bottom of the barrel Lt Heavyweights and not to many of them while Walker fought the very best. Walker wins a 15rd or KOs a very beaten Leonard late in the fight.

    Cant see SRL beating Walker.

Walker is imo, higher than SRL pound for pound, and perhaps greater at the welterweights and middleweights.

Walker was a icon in his heyday. Maybe about as up there with Dempsey himself in the 20's.

Walker was rated 3rd in the heavyweights. He was useing his speed to beat the big boys. I relly have a hard time seeing people rank SRL over Walker.

Jack Britton, Tiger Flowers, Lew Tendler, Max Rosenbloom, Paul Berlenbach, and Mike McTigue weren't quality enough?
