To me this is one of the most critical aspects to the Mayweather v Pac fight... and both Freddie Roach & Floyd Mayweather are both well aware!

With such little separating these 2 fighters it will certainly come down to the finer of details.

Mayweather will not want to get into the ring with Pacquiao wearing 8oz gloves – He’s not stupid, he knows about Pacs punching power.

Mayweather holds a 1.5 inch height advantage and 5 inch reach advantage over Pac.
Hand Speed is even. Pac holds the advantage in Power. With so much at stake, Floyd will want to take away one of Pacs main strengths.

Even at welterweight Pac holds the power advantage over Mayweather. If Pac is to beat Mayweather, he has to hurt him and hurt him more than once. Mayweather s defence will make it difficult for Pac to catch him, so when he does its crucial that Pacs punches have maximum effect – especially as they head down the stretch.

Floyd is aware of the difference 8oz/10oz gloves can play in boxing match, especially at the top level. "I knocked Ricky Hatton out with 10oz gloves; Pacquiao did it wearing 8oz gloves”. Floyd trying to justify why it took him 10 rounds to KO Hatton, and Pac only 2.

Granted, the left hook by Pac would have knocked Hatton out even with 12oz gloves on, however he isn’t going to catch Floyd as cleanly and often as he did Hatton. So when he does finally catch him – the punches have to count and have maximum impact.

At this elite level, athletes deal in the smallest percentages between winning and losing. With 8oz gloves Pacs power is lethal. 10oz, the power is still there but not as damaging. If Pacs power is even slightly negated, it could be the difference in the fight.

Now, before all of the haters start slagging this off… Answer me this one question… If a 50/50 split has been agreed by both parties then why hasn’t the deal been officially signed and agreed? Answer: Roach wants 8oz gloves – Mayweather wants 10oz gloves – they both know the importance! 8oz gloves play to Pacs strengths… 10oz gloves play to Mayweathers.

The devil is in the detail. Thoughts

Basically, what you're saying is that Mayweather is afraid of Pacquiao's power. but I don't think it's the gloves that will make both parties to sign the fight contract. It's the freaking venue. I read that Pacquiao doesn't want to fight at the staples center and Mayweather doesn't wanna fight at Dallas.

Venue will be the last of the items that can be a deal breaker, give me a f*king break.:patsch

Gloves, contracted weight, ring size are the key. It seems that Mayweather is trying everything to not make the fight happen. Olympic drug testing was recently requested and Pacquiao complied. What else do you think he will demand?

It's all quiet on the Mayweather camp. It's official that they haven't signed but Pacquiao did.

How can Pac sign to something that's not in stone?

It really does not matter what gloves are worn. Not in this fight.

I agree somewhat ,that yes the 8oz gloves will help Pac but they will also help Floyd who is no slouch and has some pop.He also takes into consideration that he has brittle hands ( Floyd that is) so he would have the extra protection for his hands and the extra protection from Pacs at the same time.

this fight is more about skills than gloves...
pouring a non-stop-angled shots on floyd..
    & coutering Pac's attack...

Well, both of boxers don't want to fight at the venues they were offered to are you saying that that's not a key to making this fight happen? :patsch

This post isn't designed to delve into the tactics/styes of both fighters. I'd only be going over old ground.... Pacs southpaw stance, footspeed, straight left.... floyds straight right, rediscovered jab, defensive skills ect.... Both fighters are highly skilled - one more in offense, the other more defense.

My point is that the deal has not been made due to the disagreements about 8oz/10oz gloves.

If 8oz gloves are used - Pac has a much better chance of beating floyd. And in my opinion he will.

Ring size has a slight bearing on negotiations, but the real stumbling block is the gloves. Venue does not come into it!

According to Roach according to sources according to sports writers...
The gloves have been set at 8oz with each fighter choosing their own brand.

That is shocking news, if true.

Most of you need to watch some tape with fighters wearing different gloves against similar opponents... oh, wait! There's just happens to be a trilogy showcasing that with some random Filipino guy getting voted "Fighter of the Year" off of it... jeez, if I could only remember his name.
