This would be the prime Johnson who boxed James J Jeffries' ears off and rendered him unable to come out for round 15 vs the intimidator who sparked Patterson. Who do you guys like here. This is difficult but I pick Johnson by late round TKO if the fight is scheduled for 20 rounds like back in Johnson's day.

    Johnson TKO 17 Liston

    Liston KO 4.

Take Johnson out of that era and he just wasn't that good.

I think his nickname is telling for the time. How does a man who is 6'1 and barely scales 200lbs for most of his career be called a giant? When you see the size of most of his opponents, you'll understand.

Under modern rules, Liston would crush him. Sonny has 50 years of gloved boxing development on his side.

Liston had trouble with fighters who could avoid and counter his shots, which Johnson would be doing all night. Since Liston generated his power while coming forward, he'd walk into Johnson's lightning fast counters, particularly the straight right. On the inside, Johnson was a sharper puncher and a bit stronger than Liston.

I'm not convinced that Liston was more skilled than Johnson due to boxing developments over the years. Liston wasn't particularly skilled at fighting out of a clinch, parrying or checking a jab. Johnson could do all of these.

I see Johnson winning a decision over 15 rounds. His handspeed and defense would be the key. I can't envision this fight ending inside the distance.

My first expectation is that this pairing would last the time limit, and probably without any knockdowns taking place.

Lil' Artha' knew how to defend against a jab, especially coming from someone considerably slower than himself. He had the physical strength and clinching skills necessary to neutralize Sonny in close. Nor would he have have stupidly tried to go toe to toe with Liston as Patterson foolishly attempted to do.

On the other hand, Johnson didn't have the firepower to take Sonny out, and he wouldn't have bothered to try. Whitehurst, Machen and Martin showed over a period of ten years that Jack's movement, size and defensive skills would have been plenty sufficient for him to remain upright for as long as a match with Liston was scheduled.

Imira just nailed it. Johnson UD 15 Liston

And John Ruiz has forty years "of development" on Liston so I guess he beats Sonny ?

Johnson would make a ****** out of Sonny.
