In Tyson-Holyfield 1 & 2 both were past their primes. It made huge money, but the outcome didn`t determine the best fighter in the world, not even the best heavyweight. Tyson-Lewis... The same. And Tyson knew he didn`t have a chance. Oscar has been past it since 2003. I say the last fight that qualifies as a REAL superfight was Tito-Oscar, almost 10 years ago. Now Pac-Floyd has that distiction: 2 guys in their primes (or near their primes), at their best weight, both hughe money makers, great expectation in the general public. A fight that comes once in a decade.
Vargas and Delahoya was pretty huge especially in Southern California, and it was a very good fight too.
I still feel that.. Tyson vs Holyfield Tyson vs Lewis Holyfield vs Lewis.. None of these so called, super fights of the past recent years... Have matched them World Wide..! and i don't care what **** Golden Boy says.. Boxing was simply bigger back then...!
Tell the Brits that hatton mayweather wasnt' a superfight. Tell the Danes that Kessler Calzaghe wasn't a superfight. In fact, what was the last american superfight is more what the post should read. but yeah pfb pac is for sure the biggest american superfight in a long time.
Mayweather-Hoya was a superfight, no matter how you want to characterize it. The buys tell the story.
Real Superfights are far and few between. In my lifetime of boxing awareness, I'd say Ali-Frazier 1 and Duran Leonard 1, as far as fights that lived up to that billing. There were other fights, like DLH-Tito that were expected to be historic events that didn't quite meet expectations. Now , Frazier Ali 1971 was not only a fight between two undefeated heavyweight champions with crazily diverse personalities, the genuine animosity displayed was unparalelled to my awareness at the time. The suspense leading up to that fight was almost unbearable for me. That is until Duran and Leonard signed to fight in Canada. Like Frazier and Ali, the Brawl in Montreal was between two guys that could kill ordinary contenders , and who hated one another like rat poison. When I was watching Roberto and Ray wait for that first bell, my head almost exploded. And of course, both fights lived up to the hype.
In my ltime of following boxing.. no true Ali-Frazier like superfights.. Some were superfights for me though like Kessler-Calzaghe. Mayweather-DLH had the hype and build up of a superfight too i believe.
Meh, legacy and nostalgia are why you think those fights are bigger than say.. De La Hoya vs Hopkins Jones Jr vs Ruiz Mayweather vs Hatton/Oscar Pacquaio vs Cotto/MAB/Morales
There are plenty of 'superfights' that are between two great fighters and are hugely hyped, but turn out to be ****. DLH vs Mayweather, for example. I still think heavyweight fights are the biggest generally, but there aren't the big names in the division to make a fight all that big, certainly by comparison to huge fights involving Lewis, Tyson, Holyfield and Bowe in the 1990's. Floyd vs Pacquiao is probably the biggest non-HW fight since Leonard vs Hearns I.
I've not been a boxing fan long, but Pacquiao v Mayweather must be the first truly truly superfight that I will see. I got a feeling Leonard v Duran and Ali v Frazier were the last proper truly superfights.
