    I wouldn't mind seeing MW-HW, 8 man tourney. But that's about it.

    Cain Velasquez
    Junior Dos Santos
    Machida
    Rampage
    Rua
    Anderson Silva
    Belfort
    Couture

That sounds good belfort and silva could fight at a higher weight class and still be effective.

i fought in a 5 minute 8 man competition and by the end of the last fight i couldn't even punch anymore. It could be good but it could suck.

The day UFC do a cross promotion is the day they publicly admit they have an equal. Strikeforce are quickly on their way to being their equal but I fear that even if the UFC have an equal, they won't do a cross promotion in the US.

yea but this tournament won't happen in one night. Much like a 1st round-2nd round-3rd then finals. Only one fight then winner fight in the next event.

I agree that those competition is a killer. I used to take tae kwon do and we have to spar every class with everybody. By the time we're done im about to passed out.

Totally agree, would be amazing tho, two best fighters from each weight division, say the top contender in the UFC v the champ in Strikeforce and vice versa, then the winners facing each other in the final. Id love to see Dana put his money where is mouth is

It's just not a great idea, if you want to see Machida vs Lesnar or the like, the smaller fighter can just not cut weight and fight at the higher weightclass.

In all the modern openweight tournaments the winner weighs in at heavyweight, and most of the fighters competing do as well.

Plenty of fighters would weigh in 2 weightclasses up if they didn't cut weight; BJ could easily weigh 171, GSP easily 186, etc, etc, etc.

So if fighters can easily go up 2 weightclasses, and the winners are heavyweights anyway, there is really no sense in having somebody fight 3 weightclasses too heavy; for one, its not safe.

No it wouldn't, that isn't what pound for pound means. It is also a very old term dating back to Sugar Ray Robinson, its not a Dana saying at all.

Just because the best HW would beat the best bantamweight doesn't automatically make the HW better pound for pound.

I think Dana did this when he took Chuck into the pride tournament and got him beat up.

Sorry to bump this old thread but I found this quite an interesting read as me and my mates were discussing it recently.

To be honest I really don't see it happening for one, as White has worked tirelessly to make MMA a legitimate sport and this would just take it back to the 90s when open-weight tournaments were all that happened. But also, this would not decide who is the best p4p fighter at all!? Of course BJ and other light fighters would be up for this. They're trained in taking punishment, there's always the outside chance of beating a HW and making yourself a superstar. As for HWs... what's in it for them???

If Brock Lesnar wins the open-weight tournament and his run to the final was Kenny then a semi-final win over BJ and a final with lets say GSP... what does it prove? That Brock Lesnar is a hench dude and can beat up far smaller guys... It certainly wouldn't prove that he's the top p4p fighter in the UFC, merely the biggest!

As for a SF vs UFC promotion, I really wish they would go ahead with it. If they did champions vs champions then Henderson and Fedor wouldn't be in it, and IMO the UFC would pwn!... Well Mousasi vs Machida would be a tough one to call I suppose!?

If it was champ vs champ then it would unfortunatley be Overeem representing SF!? Although tbh I only ever watched one Overeem fight so I can't really make a prediction on that.

    Would be:

    Overeem vs Lesnar
    Mousasi vs Machida =D
    Shields vs Silva
    Diaz/Zaromskis vs St. Pierre
    Melendez vs Penn
