Judging is always somewhat subjective. The fight had a number of close rounds that could have gone either way. How you scored them depends on personal preference. What do you like better, hard accurate shots, or the guy doing more work? The only bad score card was one that had it way to wide for Williams. Ironically. I can't stand Julie Lederman, but she called this one right.
we had many posts abotu the judging of the fight most of us agreed that the range of the scores could have been anywhere from 115-113 martinez to 117-111 williams. the wide scoring was still a bit too wide but we agreed that 117-111 would have been justifiable.
The judges in Pavlik/Taylor II scored it 115-113, 116-112, 117-111. I scored it 3 times, and came up with 116-112 the first time, and then 117-111, and finally 115-113. Some fights just have so many close rounds that scores can be all over the map, and still be justifiable.
Round 1: 9-9 Draw Lederman made a good case on how Martinez could have won the round because he actually hurt Williams but I'm scoring it an even round. Round 2: 10-9 Martinez, he easily dominated that round.. Round 3: 10-9 Martinez, Williams started good in this round but Martinez countered and outlanding him from 2 minutes on. Williams cut in this round. Round 4: 10-9 Williams, this round was close both fighter were landing significant punches, but Williams landed a huge left at the 10 second mark to take this round. Round 5: 10-9 Williams, Williams started this round very well, both exchanged heavy blows in the middle of the round, Paul outworked him at the end of the round. Round 6: 10-9 Williams, Sergio had his jab working very well in the first part, Williams outworked him and landed some good lefts, Sergio rolled them so they didn't hurt but they still looked effective. Round 7: 10-9 Williams Nullified Martinez's right and had a very effective jab Round 8: 10-9 Martinez This is the round he began throwing the straight left to the body which set up the huge left right combination that stunned Williams late in the round. Round 9: 10-9 Williams both had their moments and both used the jab very effictively, Williams outworked him Round 10: 10-9 Martinez, he won this land by landed 5 or 6 very hard straight shots and his body work Round 11: 10-9 Martinez very close round but I think Kellerman said it best when he said "i'd rather be Martinez this round" I agree he landed some very hard shots, Williams did also but Sergio's were far more effective and ended the round with a right hook. Williams cut was opened up very badly. Round 12: 10-9 Martinez This is one of the only rounds where Sergio matched punches with Williams. However, he landed a huge shot at around 2:35 and at the 2:00 mark. Williams best landed shot was at the referees break and late in the round. Martinez landed some very good straight lefts to the body as well. 114-113 Martinez My card was different from Lederman's because he scored the 1st a 10-9 round for Martinez when I had it a draw, and I gave the last two rounds to Martinez, he gave them to Williams, all the other rounds are the same.
You gotta give someone 10 in the 1st rd, unless there is a penalty. I gave it to Williams as he pretty much dominated the round up until the last 30 seconds. Yes, Martinez KD was more spectacular, but he landed very little aside from that while Williams was far busier. I gave Martinez the 11th, but Williams the 12th. 115-113 Williams.
I don't think that Williams dominated the first round by any means. His knockdown was really pathetic as well. You can tell Martinez was a little upset because he let a point get away. The 12th was close but Martinez definitely landed the more telling blows. All of Williams punches came during tie-ups and they were pitty-pay punches. I thought this was a clear round for Martinez. And you don't 'have' to give someone a 10 in the first round.
I agree about Martinez KD in the 1st, he wasn't really hurt at all. But it counts and Williams did do far more in the rd than Martinez. As for the 12th, Martinez had been gassed for a few rounds and had been leaning/holding on for dear life at times. Williams, i thought, had gotten the better of the exchanges.....i might b e wrong about which rd I gave Martinez...the 11th or 12th.....but I gave 1 to each. Martinez had a penchant for being seriously outworked in certain rds, only to rally and gain some ground. In some people's eyes, he did enough in those rounds, in others it was not. But it seemed he let Williams outwork him, often to his detriment. He was pretty much exhausted and looked like he could ony muster enough to throw in flurries.....and granted he did damage in those flurries. It was an awesome fight, and easily could've went the other way.
Lederman gave the 11th to Williams which I didn't agree with. That's funny because the 12th round I saw Sergio dig deep and not let Paul outwork him. He was landing good body shots and landed at least 3 or 4 heavy straight lefts. Regardless this was a good ass fight...I thought Paul was going to wear Sergio down but Sergio is a very well conditioned fighter. He is humble and respectful. As far as that judge that had it 109-100 or whatever, Kellerman was right on calling him out. Him and Van Hoy should be banned.
Judges like that should be literally banned. Just how only certain refs are used for title fights like Bayless, Cortez, and Smoger, only very qualified and unbias judges should be used in title fights.
