within in a matter of months, referee mayweather v hatton and hopkins v calzaghe completely differently. why did he allow zero inside fighting and spoiling in the mayweather fight (at times he was calling break even before there was anything to break) then months later, let hopkins hold and spoil all night long v calzaghe without any punishment. btw, this is not a thread questioning who won either fight, its a thread asking why did cortez completely change his refereeing methods within a matter of months to favour the homebased americans in both these fights.
Cortez allowed Hatton and Mayweather to wrestle for most of the 7th, 8th and 9th rounds. Interestingly, thats when Hatton started to get broke down.
You know, when I first heard that stuff, I was underway on a submarine, so I didn't get to see the fight or read reports until a couple weeks later, but I am curious if Cortez was a little biased in the fight. I heard it but never thought cortez would ruin the first couple rounds.
Different styles of fights completely .... Hatton was rushing in recklessly and it was Hatton who initiated the clinching.. I can't believe how some people thought Hatton was ever doing good in that fight... if you watch it objectively it is easy to see Mayweather was in control the entire fight and never in any danger at all. Hatton is not a huge puncher and with those 10oz gloves they had on, he had very little chance to even put a scratch on Mayweather. The only rounds that Hatton "won" were due to Mayweather's inactivity, but if you watch the fight closely, he maybe landed a total of 2 flush shots on Mayweather, everything else bounced off arms, elbows and shoulders.
i'm not disputing who won pal, i just want to know why cortez was coming down on hatton so hard but let hopkins spoil all night with no punishment only a few months later.
when cortez was at his worst in the first few rounds, hatton wasn't initiating the clinching, pbf was and when he wasn't it was because cortez was breaking them up every time hatton got close.
i not disputing the results, i'm disputing cortez and his clear change of refereeing tactics between the 2 fights to favour the 2 american fighters.
Hopkins punches then holds. When in the clinch Hopkins is constantly working. Hatton on the other hand bull rushes in with his head down, grabs his guy tries to get him to the ropes, then throws. Refs are more judicious with the former. And Cortez did let alot of Hattons **** go in the latter rounds.
Yeah, that is questionable. I do remember people being upset. I might have to watch that fight again, and pay more attention to cortez.
You all have to remember, Ali held down every opponent by the back of their head, to make their neck tired. There were only like 2 refs that made him stop.
hopkins wasn't workin in the clinch he was constantly holding and trying to stop calzaghe from working. cortez did nothing to punish hopkins for it. cortez may have let some stuff go later on in the hatton fight but it was only when hatton was broken in the fight and after he had a point deducted. he let the inside stuff go when he knew that it was actually suiting mayweather better.
