This to me is exactly right and how I always percieved it. I also agree that the Cotto-Pacquiao fight is a bit overrated because it did get repetitive when Cotto was just trying to survive. But when I remember it I just remember the first 5 five rounds of it and how great the beginning of the fight was.
I think Dunne-Cordoba is getting overrated. I thought it was a great fight I would put it in my top 5-7, but I've read a couple of posts where it's "fight of the decade."
Personally I would disagree with that! Some of the greatest fights I have seen happened before i saw them, and in many cases before i was born...sometimes even multiple veiwings can enhance the fight in my mind! That way I know what to look for, and discover new things along the way. The question is what do you enjoy more the excitment of the uncertainty or the studying of the 2 combatants?
Ali vs Foreman, the stoppage was great, but it was pretty one sided. Personally I think Ali made up the rope a dope. Ali came out in the first round then punished Foreman. The I think he felt his skills and hand speed were sufficient to catch Foreman coming in and they were. Ali toyed with him. I also still dont see why people say this fight was Foremans. Ali was killing him, Foremans face was unrecognizable by the stoppage, and most of Foremans shots were arm punches to the body that meant nothing because Ali wasnt moving.
Virtually all of the fights that get regarded as automatically "great" based on the combatants exchanging with each other like Rock-Em-Sock-Em Robots and trading knockdowns are overrated. Vastly. The mindnumbing truth is that that this IS the criteria in the minds of alot of people for a "great" fight period. You can have two otherwise **** pugs, and so long as they bash each other's skulls in and negate defense entirely it's the ****ing FOY.

Spending a lot of time fighting effectively off the ropes, even against big punchers, was nothing new. Ali was far from the first guy to successfully employ such a tactic.
