Yeah, I pretty much agree. Klits defensive tactics of 'leaning back' that is raved about here, doesn't look so great fighting a big strong guy that can reach him when he does that. Lewis after the first few rounds, seemed to think there was no way Vitlay could knock him out, so as you point out, virtually didn't even worry about moving his head. That essentially turned the fight into a bar room brawl. Vitlay should have finished Lewis in the second, but didn't. After that, Lewis simply decided he could take 2 of Vitlays shots, to land 1 big one of his own. Seemed to work out OK.
It's amazing how often that point gets missed by the Klit-ites....the evidence is right there staring them in the face but they refuse to accept it. The hissy fit was for the cameras, VITLAY knew the game was up before the doctor stopped the fight.
Was Lewis crowned Peoples Champion, and Winner of The Event afterwards? No, so facts from the actual bout become irrelevant.
Lennox was preparing for a short blow-out of Kirk Johnson, a fighter who offered almost no threat, and who was himself a substitute after Tyson pulled out of the rematch which was originally scheduled for this date. Vitali was preparing to fight undefeated Cedric Boswell who was considered a prospect at the time. It was the biggest fight of Vitali's career in terms of exposure - an undefeated American on the undercard of the Undisputed Champ with the opportunity of a title shot if he won. Who do you think trained harder? :think Anyway, I don't want to get into the same old arguments. the bottom line it this was a great fight, and one which both fighters "won" - Lennox won the fight, Vitali proved himself and erased the damage done to his reputation after the Byrd fight.
No, I remember him getting punched in the arm a few times by the guy that had just lost, demanding a rematch while Lewis was trying to do an interview.....I also remember the defeated fighters little brother dragging him away from Lewis while saying "you're making a **** of yourself, never mind I'll give you a special massage in the dressing room darling" He said it in German though, not many people noticed. I did.
Every time I see that Foreman avatar in a Lewis/VITLAY thread, it's like 2005 all over again :happy:happy:happy
Lewis vs Grant was more exciting while it lasted. It had a bigger build-up too. Grant was the "Next Big Thing". A lot of "experts" had him down as the favourite too. Guinn vs Grant and Guinn vs Dokiwari were great scraps too. Guinn was such a disappointment after those fights. Also Wlad vs Barrett, Byrd I and Byrd II were very impressive performances, although very one-sided. Rahman vs Corrie Sanders was another very entertaining fight from the 00's.
I know. I get a bit sick of saying the same things over and over, but there always seem to be a new batch fools that need schooling every year or so. :yep
Agreen on Lewis V Grant...Lewis V Tyson had a bigger build up than the Klit fight too. For heavy fights I really enjoyed that Fury v McDermott fight last year too, also when Sprott flattened Harrison. Lewis V VITLAY was only really memorable due to the controversy - otherwise it would have been another hard fought stoppage like the Bruno fight.
Bring back "Gottem", Widdow v Radar and pages of pages of 'grainy stills' showing indisputable evidence the cut was the result of a headbutt, aggravated by Lewis' dreadlocks, and the undeniable fact that Vitlay was going to win because Lewis sat on his stool hard.
:rofl Yep, been there, seen it, got the t-shirt etc. You forgot Mendozas wonderful line about Lewis's dreadlocks and beard being 'illegal' though That was the best bull**** line I ever heard about this fight.
