I think you answered you own statement "world class league player" Rugby League is a very small world.
Hey, guys like Inglis and Jayne Hayne are some of the best athletes on the planet, unfortunately Carl Webb kinda just shat on the entire sport lastnight...
I agree, there are those who make it big through their obvious athleticism (Mundine), there are those who are very hard workers and determined because of limited oppurtunities (Wood and Hapoate), and there are those who live off past glories without fully commiting to a tough sport (Webb).
Its more than that though. Whoever said webb is a world class league player earlier was being generous. I am not saying they were wrong but it is generous to say that about webb. Webb was pushing for a test jersey for a while a couple of years back and did play origin and did play a test (mainly through injuries). However he very nearly became a reserve grade player last year. in fact he was dropped for a couple of games. There were a couple of injuries and he came back in to the side. At the moment he is a first grade player whose career could go either way. If he forgets how to catch again like he did last year he is done. if he pulls out some big performances and there are some injuries or retirements he will be a fringe state of origin player (mainly because QLD pick on history and not form) Last year he asked the broncos if they were interested in taking him back when his cowboys contract was up. Apparently they turned him down immediately without prior discussion or considering what salary he was after, they just werent interested.
I am trying to figure out whether you are talking about boxing or football here... What you wrote is perfect for both actually. Mundine very talented at both, relies heavily on athleticism and talent (although he works hard too) Wood and hopa both worked hard as footy players and both work hard at boxing because of exactly what you said Webb - im not convinced he has commit to football let alone boxing. Still living off old glory at the broncos if you ask me.
just shows that boxing is a totally different sport, and fitness in boxing, is different to being fit on the footy field. Just like if a boxer was to swim, I'd imagine they would be puffed in a matter of mins.. Also , this transition from NRL to boxing must stop. 1 person started it, now everybody is jumping ship, and it's really defaming the sport of boxing.
The only league player who has any ability to box is Anthony Mundine. The rest of them are bums who fight bums. Yes i realise Hopoate has won the Aussie title but big deal, if he fought in USA he would have a losing record and would be classified as a no mark, a bum.
Boxing requires different training to league. after his first fight which ended in the 4th, Mundine was completely ****ed and was gasping for air in the post match interview which was a couple of minutes after the bout had ended. And Mundine was a very fit league player.
