It was a great win. Not his best, but one of his top three best and better than his victory over Tyson.
Vitali was ready to knock Lewis out. Lewis was done. Lewis did not like his badly broken nose. Lewis was lucky his referee stopped the fight. Angelo Dundee said that Vitali was cheated out of the title that night. Lewis retired rather than give Vitali a rematch, and for good reason. Vitali staggered Lewis more than once, but Lewis could not stagger Vitali, not even one time. Lewis was saved and gave up his career rather than get into a right with Vitali again.
How in the living hell is anybody voting this as an insignificant win? Twelve percent of the people have it as an insignificant win. Are you kidding me? I can only think of three reasons. 1. The most reasonable being they're thinking in the sense that LL's legacy was already cemented and that it was only insignificant to his position in HW champ history. 2. They hate Vitali and refuse to accept he's an excellent scalp against all available evidence to the contrary. 3. They are ridiculously in love with Vitali and so moronic they don't believe LL really won the fight because they still don't understand the principle of a technical knockout or being potentially blinded.
Lewis was a bit out of shape and at the very end of his career. Vitali was prime, and has, IMO, gone on to be the best HW of the post-Lewis era. So not only does Lewis have a 'w' over the best guy to come before him (Holyfield) he has TKO 'w' over the best guy who came after him (Vitali). All things considered, at was at the very least, a "very good" victory.
Great win of course, Lewis was on his way out and had a very entertaining fight with someone who hasn't lost since that fight and was considered the best heavyweight after Lewis. Yeah people will say it was controversial and so on but take a look at these cuts properly, seriously. I'm surprised they didn't stop it in the 3rd right when it happened or the 4th.
wtf! VK was clearly getting the upper hand! there was a reason people called for a rematch!! i lost respect for lewis going back on his word! but a wins a win thompson v eubank 1 springs to mind! thompson got the W but eubank was winning the fight!
Imo it was a close call, Steward admitted afterwards that Vitali made clear to Lewis that he was to far past his prime to keep reigning as the champion so he retired. And it was a close fight, both took some heavy shots and noone knows what would have happened if that cut hadn't opened. You can vote for Vitali because he had dealt out the hardest punches and won 4 of the 6 rounds, and you can vote for Lennox coming back in the fight after losing the first 4. I vote Lewis coming back, but I'm a Lewis fan so not completely unbiased. Saying Lennox opened the cut, so he won TKO, so it's the same as a KO is total nonsence of course... Vitali lost a TKO from a totally otclassed Cris Byrd too, on a injured shoulder, so that's a TKO so the same as a KO too? Don't think so... He was just unlucky in both fights... Everyone knows what would have happened to Byrd if the fight would have gone on, against Lewis it was a close fight, Lewis was the lucky one.
It's funny people calling the win illegitimate. Klit couldn't continue because he wasn't fit too, he almost couldn't see out of one eye. So even if they went another 1 or 2 rounds Lewis obviously would have won if Klit had impaired vision. And how did he end up like that?: Lewis.
I really dislike Vitali, but I must admit he didn't lose that fight in my book. Yes, Lewis walked away with the win, but he didn't get the best of Vitali that night. A rematch should of happend, but Lewis didn't want to go again. I will say this much, I do believe Lewis would of won the fight if it continued. The cut being the main reason.
Yeah. Lewis breaks Vitali's face on his fist, so bad that Vitali can't continue, and somehow, people don't think it's a legit win
