Why on earth does anyone still consider Casamayor the champ 0f 135?

Casa was never the champ to begin with so diaz does not have to beat him to claim that status.

The belts are not everything but they do count for something. If you read my posts you will see that I am not basing my argument soley on belts, I'll summarize again:

I don't believe that Casa was ever champ to begin with. Diego rightfully lost the first fight with Castillo, when a fighter goes down, he has to be up and ready to fight by the count of 10, Diego was clearly not ready to fight as he spit out the mouthpiece, and instead of doing the correct thing and stopping the fight, the ref gave him an entire mintue to recover, to make matters worse he was KTFO in the rematch. If you want to disqualify that fight for Castillo not making weight then you also have to take into consideration that a man weighing in at 140 (as diego did in the Casa fight) can not put a lightweight championship on the line.

Secondly, I believe that Champions have to actually defend their belts to have the right to continue to call themselves champions, Casa has not fought once since beating Diego and his next fight is against the most undeserving guy he could have posibbly found. I don't think he deserved to be called champ to begin with but even if I did, I would seriously question it the way he is holding it hostage.

IMO lineage was broken when Chico lost to Castillo, we can't be without a champ forever so someone has to restart it, I feel that Juan has done that by beating the top guys in the division with the exception of Casamayor who although he is usually very outspoken has shown absolutly 0 interest in fighting Juan

If we are going to talk official rules here then let's look at all of them.

Just like you can not win a title if you come in over weight, you can not defend one Casamayor was not fighting for a lightweight championship when he fought Corrales and he knew it. There have been countless times throughout the history of the sport where guys (such as Roberto Duran for example) fought above their weightclass simply for money or to stay active and everyone knew and recognized that the title was not on the line and it was not a championship fight. Why should casamayor get special treatment in this case? IN your own words "this is the way it has always been"

Of course the rule applies to the champion. If he does not come into the fight at the contracted weight, the fight is not sanctioned and the challenger can not win the title because it is no longer on the line. The fact that the original contract stated that the title was on the line is meaningless because the entire contract was broken when Diego failed to make weight. This is not something I am making up to support my argument, it is an undisputable fact that is in the rule books. for a title fight to be sanctioned and a title to be on the line

fighters have to come in at or below the contracted weight, if the champion does not make weight but the challenger does, and the challenger wins, the title becomes vacant so no the champ can not always come in over weight and keep his title.

I won't argue this all night because we are clearly never going to agree. I believe that people have a soft spot for casa because they feel like he has gotten the **** end of the stick a lot (like in the Freitas and Castillo fights) so they want to keep beleiving the he deserves to be called champion.

Since I have you ear (or eyes) though let me ask you this. Why do you think that the normally outpspoken and flamboyant, cocky Casamayor has not so much as whispered Diaz's name and do you think that "the man" of a division should be fighting a nobody with 14-2-2 record when there is so many people questioning his legitmacy as chmapion?

you are dead wrong in your assumptions and argument. a champion cannot retain a title if he comes in overweight. if he wins the fight, the title is vacated. if the chalenger comes in at weight in that fight and wins he wins the title.

simply put, the title is only in play for one fighter.

Cuz people are stupid. I file this in the same bin that I did all the Margarito nonsense. Juan Diaz is the man at 135. Period.

You're missing some facts there buddy.

    1. The WBC made a weird move and gave Casamayor interim status on the belt that they stripped him of. He also has the Ring title which he won by beating Corrales the last time.
    2. See #1. Juan Diaz does not have the Ring title.

The circumstances of how Corrales won the first fight mean little, if anything. He still won. In the 2nd fight, Castillo didn't make weight, Corrales did. Therefore, Castillo was ineligible to win the title, so Corrales would keep it no matter the outcome. Then comes Corrales-Casamayor III. Corrales didn't make weight, therefore is ineligible to walk out of the fight with the title, win or lose. Casamayor made weight, so he could, and did, walk out with the title. Not the first time this has happened, Jorge Barrios both won and lost a title with the same circumstances. He beat Mike Anchondo in a fight for a alphabet title when Anchondo didn't make weight and lost the title at the scales, then lost that same title at the scales before losing a fight to Joan Guzman. I don't know where anyone is getting this both fighters have to make weight for the title to be on the line bull****.

Someone tell Casamayor to beat Kid Diamond and then we'll start taking him seriously.

    spot-on.

Many posters here are being nostalgic about Casa's previous wins..:-(

Right now, at his age, he will also fall. No amount of good boxing skill set can help win a fight against Juan at this point. HE will be overwhelmed physically.:deal

You sure about this? If you watch last night's telecast it is pretty clear that the Diaz camp is holding the ring belt up behind him.

I agree...but, since Casamayor didn't actually lose his title in the ring and since he's still fighting at 135lbs.), then Joel still has the right to call himself champion.

I'll use this argument again: Everyone and their dog knew that Ezzard Charles was the best LH in the world during the 40's. But Gus Lesnevich was still the champion. Everyone knew that SRR was the best welterweight in the world during that same time, but Cochrane and Servo were the champions throughout much of the decade.

Diaz is in a similar position. I'd favor him, right now, over anyone who fights at 135lbs...but I don't consider him the true champion until he beats Casamayor. Simple as that.
