When I was called in front of the Board when first applying for my licence, at the same meeting was a pleasant enough gentleman who was there on an application to become a referee. Apparently he had been working as a ref in the amateurs (though I personally hadn't encountered him, that isn't here nor there) and he wanted to switch over to the professional game.
He went in for his interview after I did, but I happened to still be around after he came out as I had got talking to a few local boxing personalities. I asked him how he had got on, and he said that he got turned down, and they didn't proceed with his application. To be honest I was surprised by that. I thought they would at least give him a chance, and give him a try out. But apparently he was told "they weren't in need of any new referees at the moment" and got the standard "we'll keep your name on file".

I've always been under the impression they were screaming out for new R&J's, particularly some younger blood. Yet this was the first, and only time to date, I've seen someone apply to be a professional referee, and he got turned down without even a try out.

You do always see the same refs though so I guess they don't need any more. I would have guessed that they do get paid - but not enough to make a living on but the view of the fight ain't bad

who was the ref when Hatton fought Tszyu?

That's right Parris. Hatton got away with quite a few things that night.

Yes, referees get paid. If a promotion's total purse money is less than £4000, then the 1st ref is paid £60, the 2nd ref £40. However if the show doesn't feature any more than 4 contests, then only 1 ref can be appointed and he is paid the 1st ref's fee plus 50% of the 2nd ref's fee.

Any promotion where the total purse money is, or greater than £4000:
1st ref - £80 (+ any additional fee determined by the Board)
    2nd ref - £70
    3rd ref - £50

    "A Star" refs:
    British title eliminators - £125 + expenses
British, Commonwealth championships & final eliminators - £150 + expenses
    judges - £100 each + expenses

    Purses above total of £30,000 - Ref - £150, judges - £100 each.

Also worth noting that any show that is 50 miles or more from a referee's residence, then the promoter is obliged to pay him expenses and provide accomodation.

They definately need more refs in the Scottish Area. Paul Graham just quit leaving us only with two. Victor Laughlin had said to me before that happened that he thought we needed more anyway and he would be willing to personally tutor anyone who wants to go for it

Thanks for all the info. Wow, for some reason I thought they would get paid more.

Perhaps they should pay more. After all usually you get what you pay for...

Depends really. That theory holds if you think they are inept, it doesn't hold if you think they are bent.

People on the take are amoral/ immoral. You could pay them £1000 a fight and they'd still put the fix in for an extra 250.

I think they are mostly just useless and/or blind. Pay up and get more and better candidates.

Will never happen mind, like in all sports the board just blindly defend the guys they put out there, if they don't it makes them look stupid. None of them have any balls or accountability.
